In All cities, large or small, there are certain firms who are regarded as leaders, and whose influence, in all departments of trade, is such as to command the respect and admiration of their contemporaries. In Yates Center the distinction is universally accorded to the immense mercantile establishment of Stockebrand & Stockebrand, dealers in dry goods, clothing, hats and caps, boots and shoes, groceries, queensware, etc. It is often said that "nothing succeds like success but the prime glory of all success is to have acquired it through the force and industry of genius, untiring energy, keeping pace with the times and honest and straight forward dealing with the public. To such reasons must be ascribed the wonderful development and expansion of what is now Woodson county's most extensive mercantile interest, representing as an investment of many thousands. The establishment occupies the two stories and basement of one of the finest brick and stone business blocks in this city with grown dimensions of 25X140 feet. The main floor is devoted to the dry goods, hats and caps, boots and shoes, furnishing goods and grocery departments. On the second floor are displayed the exquisite and extensive line of men and boys clothing, ladies' cloaks and wraps, carpets; curtains, window shades, trunks, traveling bags, etc. Both of these floors have the advantage of excellent light, thereby enabling a purchaser to see exactly the quality of the goods exhibited. The basement is filled with reserve heavy stock and the largest line of crockery and glassware in the county. In the rear of the main salesroom is a large frost proof room with a storage capacity of several carloads. Flour from three of the leading mills in the state is handled, and being purchased in car lots, with cash discounts, it is placed on the market at prices lower than can be offered by those who are unable to avail themselves if these large trade discounts. For about three years this store has been conducted on a one price, plain figure, cash system. The conditions under which a thriving business must be conducted today differ materially from those which prevailed ten or even five years ago. Purchasers have ceased to trade with merchants from motives of personal friendship, or because their fathers did. The public is studying economy, and not only demands reliable, tasty goods, but the lowest living prices. Buying for cash enables Stockebrand & Stockebrand to secure a great advantages at factories and wholesale houses, and selling for cash means several profits on invested capital in a year. The cost of book-keeping and collecting, and the loss on bad accounts are obviated, and the purchaser receives the benefit of this saving. The one idea which actuates the management seems to be to furnish a reliable trading place for the peope, where they can buy everything at a uniformly small pere cent over the first cost of the goods. Emolument is sought rather in many sales than is large profits. A large country trade is a feature of this store owing to its large and varied stock, low prices, and the fact that country prouduce is taken in exchange, at the prevailing market prices. Since it was established in a modest way, in 1884, the history of the store has been one of uninterrupted success and steadily increasing patronage, and its enviable prominence of today may be atrributed to the unquestioned integrity and correct business methods of its proprietors. H. F. Stockebrand, the senior member of the firm, is a native of Kansas, having been born and reared and educated in Woodson county. He has been mayor of this city one year and councilman four years. E. W. Stockebrand, like his business associate, is a son of the sunflower state, and Woodson county.
