(MILLER) HANCOCK, both natives of Adair County, and of Irish and Holland descent, respectively. John HANCOCK was born 27-Oct-1824, and is the ninth of ten children, born to William and Alsie (SETTLES) HANCOCK. In Sep-1847, he married Miss Martha J., the fourth child and second daughter of Nathan and Rachel (VANNOY) MILLER's family of ten children. Her family were originally from the "Old Dominion" and were among the early pioneers of Adair County. Mr. HANCOCK and wife are yet living and reside about four miles northeast of Columbia on the old homestead, where Mr. HANCOCK was born and where he has all his life has been successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits. He and wife are, and have been from early life, devoted members of the Christian Church, in which church he has officiated for many years both as deacon and ruling elder. His father, William HANCOCK, was born in Virginia, 01-Jun-1782. Junius HANCOCK received a good common school and academic education in youth, although his early life was spent on the old home farm. After attaining his majority he commenced the study of law under the preceptorship of Major T. C. WINFREY, of Columbia. He was admitted to the bar in Aug-1873, and commenced the practice of the profession at Columbia, continuing until Aug-1874, when he was elected clerk of the Adair County Circuit Court on the Democratic ticket, in 1880, and is still the incumbent of the office, being now a candidate on the Republican ticket for the responsible position of County Judge. Mr. HANCOCK was married 29-Dec-1875, to Miss Mollie J., youngest daughter of the three children of George W. and Elizabeth V. (WATSON) DAMRON, both natives of Adair County. Four children have blessed their union, as follows: William F., Mason W., Samuel N. And Bettie D. Both Mr. HANCOCK and wife are members of the Christian Church, in which church he has officiated as deacon for several years. In politics he was formerly a Democrat but is now identified with the Republican party, and is one of the enterprising and successful professional and business men of the town and county.
