HAMILTON, the only merchant in the village of Breeding's and a native of Metcalfe County, was born 02-Nov-1857. His father, William Hamilton, also a native of Metcalfe and a life-long farmer, was born 01-Jun-1829. In 1853 he married Miss Melissa F. KINNAIRD, a daughter of Harrison and Isaphena (PATTERSON) KINNAIRD, the former a Kentuckian, the latter a Virginian. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of one child - William H. (subject). He owns and cultivates a well improved, fertile farm of 125 acres, on which he has placed a log and frame residence and good general improvements. Mr. and Mrs. HAMILTON are both members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Harrison KINNAIRD was a Virginia farmer, and the son of David and Polly KINNAIRD. William HAMILTON, grandfather of William H., a native of the Old Dominion and a farmer, immigrated to Metcalfe County in early life, where he entered 150 acres of the forest, erected a log cabin of the pioneer style of architecture, and began the life of a Kentucky farmer. He married Miss BUTLER, of Virginia, which marriage occurred in Kentucky, and to them were born six children, by name John, Edward, Susan, wife of Samuel MARRS; William, Benjamin and Elizabeth, wife of John PRICE - of whom only William and Susan are now living. The death of William Hamilton occurred in his seventy-fourth year, and that of his wife in the seventy-first year of her age. In life they were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. William H. HAMILTON in youth received a good English education in the three-months schools of Metcalfe County and in the high school of Edmonton, where he attended one session of ten months. His early life, until seventeen years of age, was spent in agricultural pursuits, and at the age of eighteen taught one school of three months. He then began selling goods for J. H. KINNAIRD, of Red Lick, which he continued thirty months. In 1880 he embarked in the general merchandising business in Breeding's, with a capital of $1,100. He has since continued the business very successfully, and now does a very large business, with a flourishing trade of $20,000 per annum sales. His stock, which consists of groceries, dry goods, hardware, drugs, and a general line of merchandise, is valued at $6,000, and besides the merchandising business he buys tobacco, this year to the extend of 125,000 pounds. Mr. HAMILTON was united in marriage in Jul-1880, to Miss Theo K. WOODWARD, a daughter of Julius and Mary J (MARRS) WOODWARD, natives of Metcalfe County, and their marriage has been blessed by one child, Gilford Etrick, born in Jun-1881. Mrs. HAMILTON is a member of the Baptist Church, while Mr. HAMILTON, who is not a member of any church, believes in the doctrines of Presbyterianism. He is politically a member of the Democratic party. He owns a small farm of 125 acres near Breeding's, and his estate is worth about $8,000.
