MILLER 1864-1936 Submitted By: Bill Patteson Submission Date: 28-Jan-1999 Source: The Adair County News, Columbia KY, Wednesday 04-Mar-1936, as posted on The Adair County KY Obits Forum, maintained by Dr. S.P. MILLER Buried Friday. A Valued Citizen Succumbs to Ill Health After 48 Years of Service in Adair County. Served as Health Officer. Dr. Samuel Preston MILLER, 71 years of age, died at his home on Jamestown Street 11:30 Wednesday morning after having been seriously ill for only a few days. He had been in declining health for several years, death being caused by a complication of diseases. Dr. MILLER was born 21-Aug-1864 in the Crocus community, a son of the late James P. and Sarah McCLURE MILLER. His family was one of prominence and affluence. After receiving his early training in the schools of Adair County he left for Louisville to study medicine. He graduated from the University of Louisville Medical College in 1888 and returned home to practice at Glensfork for many years before moving to Columbia. On 03-May-1888, Dr. MILLER married Miss Susie PATTESON, daughter of Captain and Mrs. O.B. PATTESON of Montpelier, and they had six children, all of whom survive together with their mother. Dr. MILLER was one of the best-known men in Adair County and without doubt one of the most beloved. His 48 years of service spent in ministering to the ills of his fellow man, the sympathy and understanding he extended the patients and his genial disposition endeared him to all. He never failed to answer the call of duty, day or night, as long as he was able, and in recent years often was found at the bedside of the sick when he should have been reserving his own strength. At the time of his death he was County Physician. He was County Health Officer from 1917 to 1932, being succeeded by Dr. N.A. MERCER, present head of the Adair County Health Department. Those surviving are his wife, Mrs. Susie PATTESON MILLER; the following children, Mrs. W.L. WELCH (of) Hazard; J.P. MILLER, Miss Susan MILLER and O.B. MILLER of Columbia; Dr. O.P. MILLER of Louisville, and Mrs. J.B. HORTON of Beeville TX. One sister, Mrs. A.H. BALLARD of Columbia; three brothers; N.B. MILLER of Buffalo NY; B.S. MILLER (of) Crocus; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. He leaves twelve grandchildren: Russell, Margaret, Sarah Louise, Pattie, Jean and James Oliver MILLER, children of Mr. And Mrs. J.P. MILLER; Mary Edwards MILLER, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. O.P. MILLER of Louisville; and Mary Welch, Billy Joe, Thelma Harper, Samuel Preston and Donald MILLER, children of Mr. and Mrs. O.B. MILLER. RICHARDSON, pastor of the Columbia Baptist Church. All of Dr. MILLER's children were here for the funeral, including his two sons-in-law, Rev. J.B. HORTON, Beeville TX, and W.L. WELCH, Hazard.
