MOTLEY was born in Allen County, Ky., September 2, 1827. At the age of twenty-seven years he removed to Warren County, Ky., where he has since resided. His father, Matthew Motley, was born near Raleigh, Wake Co., N.C., in 1787. He was engaged for a large portion of his time in farming, and also for shorter periods at carpentering, blacksmithing, and for several years operated a mill on the waters of Bay's Fork Creek. His was the first mill on the stream and was built by Joseph Boone. Matthew Motley was the son of John Motley, who was also a native of North Carolina and of English descent. Mathew Motley, Sr., married, about 1816, Pharuba Norris. She was born in 1798, in Johnson County, N.C. From this union sprang John, Henry T., Elizabeth (deceased), Thetus, Reuben, Matthew P., Pharuba (Nichols), William, Washington and Jackson (twins, the latter deceased). Matthew P. married, August 28, 1853, Sarah J., daughter of John and Elizabeth (Prunty) Knowles. To them have been born L. C.J., John K. and Eugenia V. (Hayes). Mr. Motley started about even in the race of life, but by industry and frugality he has become the owner of about 550 acres of well improved and productive land in good condition, besides a very comfortable home located thereon. He began life at wagon-making and blacksmithing, and later engaged in farming and at the carpenter trade. He is not a member of any society religious or otherwise, but neither swears nor uses tobacco in any form, and was never under the influence of liquor in his life. In politics he is a stanch Democrat. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ky/allen/bios/motley62bs.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/kyfiles/
