He appeared again 18 May 1833 and said that as best as he could remember he served a total of one year and 19 days; that he was born in either Culpeper or Spottsylvania Co VA, can't say for sure, born 10 July 1761. She displayed a Bible of great age which had been kept in the family and from which was abstracted the following. A corner of the leaf being torn off, the names are not entirely extinct [sic]. "Was borned July 10, 1761. Was borned Feb 5, 1765. Gatewood was borned Dec 21, 1783. Oaths were taken of Fletcher Gatewood and Peter FISHBOURN who say that John Gatewood preceded the first entry and Nancy Gatewood the second entry and Dotia the third entry. There was also entered in the said Bible: John and Ann Gatewood were married Aug 22, 1782 and Fletcher Gatewood further said on oath that his mother, the said Nancy or Ann Gatewood was and now is indifferently called Nancy and Ann. Peter Fishbourn and Wm HATLER swear that they knew John and Nancy many years; they were reputed to be man and wife and knew their oldest child Dotia who appears to be the age stated in the Bible. The leaf of the Gatewood Bible appeared very old, faded, rather torn and badly defaced as though a child had written all over it but one can make out in addition to what had been given, the following: Pamela? Gatewood born Dec 2, 1785 Arstiley? Gatewood born Jan 11, 1788 Roland Gatewood born Apr 12, 1790 Wiley? Gatewood born Sept 16, 1792, died Aug 4, 1806 Richard B Gatewood, born Jan 5, 1795 Marah/Manah?
