 CHESTNUT POINT & CLIBURN


 Chestnut Point was built around 1900, 4 miles east of Scottsville on the
 north side of the Mayesville Road near Chestnut Point Church on land
 donated byNancy WATKINS. School closed in 1955. Teachers included: Mrs.
 Lettie GUY, Verta FRENCH, W A WHITLOW, Mrs W A WHITLOW, W B NAPIER, Willa
 Dean BROWN, Erma WHITLOW, Lois WHITLOW, Doris CLAY, Leon WHITLOW, Charles
 CALVERT, Eunice BEWLEY, Maggie SMALLING, Mabel WILLIAMS HOOD, Ethel EATON,
 Pernie BUCHANAN, Robert STRAUSBURG.

 Cliburn School is one of the oldest in the county, was located near Carpenter's 
Mill on Long Creek. It started in1830 and many of the children who lived on the 
west side of Long Creek attended there. They included CALVERT, CARPENTER, CLIBURN, 
FISHBURN, HOLDER, PITCHFORD, SHAW and STINSON families. Catherine Ann BROWEN 
(Kitty CLIBURN) was a teacher for over 40 yeas. During the Civil War, the school 
was moved about a mile up the road near where Mt Gilead Church now stands. It 
closed in 1890.
