ALLEN COUNTY, KY SCHOOLS MT ZION Submitted by Sandi Gorin May 23, 2001 MT. ZION SCHOOL According to Norman Warnell's Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South Central Kentucky and the Upper Cumberland, there was a Mt. Zion Church in 1850 which dissolved in 1868 and reorganized in 1888. According to various records there was a school here also at an early date. The school was located off Hwy 98 (Bob Tracy Road). Trustees from 1896-1902 included: Joe SIDDENS, J C HUDSON, H L PURSLEY, Ben DOWNING, Jr, T L PARRISH, F M LANE, T E OLIVER, Dee SIDDENS, George SMALLING, E G WILSON and teachers at the same time were H G HUDSON, R T HOLLAND, & R M BROWN. Later trustees were B M PARRISH and Miller DOWNING. Teachers during 1906-1918 included Polka HOUSER, Bessie MANSFIELD, N S SHAW, Will JOHNSON, Emma GUY CROMWELL, Oscar GUY, Linus NAPIER, Maggie SMALLING, Bessie CROWDER JOHNSON and Nannie DIXON. The 1928 graduating class included: Nell DOWNING BARTON, Willie HUDSON LAW, Ella SIDDENS WOODWARD, Ina LEWIS WILSON, James JOHNSON and Winfred HUDSON. There is much other on this school --- the last class to graduate was in 1942. A class photo of 1897 shows J W WHITE as the teacher and the following students: Mary CROSSLAND, Mandy BINNION, a PAYNE, a WHITE, a PAYNE, Ed MEREDITH, Earl STURDIVANT, Ida B STINSON, a LANE, Issey LANE, Jim SIDDENS, a STINSON, Lucy Mae DOWNING, Ida HOLLAND, Ida JONES, Mary PAYNE, a STINSON, Roy STINSON, Nannie SIDDENS, Effie TRACY, Rebecca TRACY, Myrtie LANE, Marshal LANE, Mitchell MEREDITH, Oliver PURSLEY, K COX, Drew BREITT, Haywood PAYNE, WIlson BINNION, Maxie DOWNING and quite a few unknowns.
