Eugene Lee Callahan Barren County KyArchives Obituaries Unknown Glasgow KY newspaper. "FRIENDS SHOCKED AT SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. E. L. CALLAHAN. Ill Only A Few Moments Before The End Came. One of Glasgow's most popular men passed away in the death of Mr. Eugie Lee Callahan who died last Saturday morning at 2 o'clock from acute indigestion, after an illness of only a few minutes and before medical aid could be secured. "He was as well as usual and quite active the day before shaving a man after 7 o'clock. He ate a hearty supper and retired as usual, and a few minutes before 2 o'clock awoke and complained of being very ill and his wife turned the light on. Mr. Henry Jones the night watchman saw the light from across the square and walked over to see what was the matter. He heard Mrs. Callahan call the doctor and going to the door he called to Mrs. Callahan who recognized his voice and opened the door saying at the same time the "Democrat" was dying and he passed away almost instantly just as Mr. and Mrs. Pete Walkup entered the door. "It was a terrible shock to his host of friends and especially to his heart-broken wife. "Mr. Callahan was born and raised at Hiseville, a son of the late Mr. John Callahan, and his wife who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Callahan moved to Oklahoma twenty years ago with their family except "Democrat" who remained here a year or so and then followed the family to Oklahoma. After remaining there a year he returned to Glasgow where he engaged in the barber busines first with Messrs. Foster and Settle and later on his own account. "At the time of his death he was proprietor of the O. K. Barber Shop and lived in the apartment above. "His father died about a year ago but his mother is living in Tuttle, Okla. His two brothers, Messrs. William and Avery, and his four sisters, Pearl, Beulah, Dora and Mary all live in Oklahoma. "In October 1916 he was married to Miss Ruth Winn, a daughter of Rev. and Mrs. John Winn who survive. "It is said that when a boy if asked if he was a Republican or a Democrat he would answer "I am a Democrat" and so he was always after called 'Democrat" and few knew him by any other name. "He was a member of the Baptist Church at Hiseville and a member of the Knights of Pythias, a Modern Woodmen and had taken the first degree in Masonry. He was also president of the Barren County Fish and Game Commission and president of the local Chapter Izook Walton League of America. He was deeply interested in the preservation of fish and game. "He was a prosperous citizen who was popular to an unusual degree. "Funeral services were held at the residence Monday afternoon by Rev. J. A. Easley assisted by Rev.J. L. Piercey after which the remains were to taken to the cemetery at Horse Cave for burial."
