"SHOCKING DEATH CLOSES USEFUL LIFE OF PROF. ELLIS. "Friends all over Barren county were profoundly shocked when the news went out that Prof. James William Ellis had met a tragic, untimely and shocking death beneath the wheel of a truck last Friday evening at 6:30 o'clock a few miles below Lucas on the South Jackson Highway, twelve miles from Glasgow. "From what seems authoritive information Prof. Ellis, who was principal of Austin-Tracy High School, had accompanied his basketball team to Finney, where he formerly taught, for a contest. They were returning home when near the Robert Kerly property Prof. Ellis, riding on the running board of the truck, in attempting to retrieve his hat which seemed eminent of being blown off, lost his balance and fell under the rear wheel of the truck. He arose to his feet and stated that he did not believe he was badly injured, but in a few moments collapsed. He was placed in a car and rushed to the hospital here where he lived almost an hour before passing away, death resulting from internal injuries. "Besides being an educator above the average and eminently successful in his chosen profession, he was an ordained Baptist minister, and was held in the highest regard by all who knew him. His Christian character and high ideals of life made his services desirable for schoolwork and his untimely death is a distinct loss to the school work of the county. "Mr. Ellis is survived by his wife, who was Miss Jeppa Jones, and five children: Clarence, Etta, Harry, James, Acton and Jeppa. He is also survived by four brother{s}, Messrs. L. C. Ellis of Glasgow; Lee and Dewey Ellis of Berlin, N.M.; Curtis Ellis of Gary, Ind., one half-sister, Mrs. Celeste Smith, Finney; five half-brothers, Jesse Ellis of Akron, O; Chris, Woodwin, Eugene and Wilbur Ellis of Bruce; and his step-mother, Mrs. W. G. Ellis of Bruce. "Funeral services were held at the Baptist church here Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Joseph A. Gaines, and was attended by sorrowing friends and pupils from all over the county, and the burial was in the Glasgow cemetery." Glasgow Municipal Cemetery James W.
