Major Burrell Lawless May 1896 Barren County KyArchives Obituaries Glasgow (KY) Weekly TImes, 27 May 1896. "Majr Burrell Lawless died at his home, in the edge of town, Saturday morning last at six o'clock. His death was caused more from the decline of old age than from any specific disease. Major Lawless was ninety-six years old at the time of his death. "No man in this section was better known in bygone years than was Major Lawless. For almost a half-century he occupied a prominent place in the political life of Barren county. He was a man of fine intellect, a desperate fighter against his enemies, and as true as steel to his friends. At one time he was the largest tax-payer in Barren county, and was recognized as one of the wealthiest citizens of Southern Kentucky. In his younger days he was a typical Kentuckian - handsome, fearless, quick to resent an insult, relentless to the death, but equally as true to his convictions and to his friends. In his death, a remarkable character, a most picturesque, rugged personality, has gone from us. "The funeral took place at the Methodist church, of which he had been for many years, a member, Sunday evening last, at two o'clock, after which the remains were interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. "THE TIMES has been promised a lengthy sketch of Maj. Lawless' stormy and eventful life and this it will publish at an early day."
