John Anderson Matthews February 7 1921 Barren County KyArchives Obituaries Unknown Glasgow KY newspaper. "THE DEATH OF A WELL KNOWN CITIZEN. John Anderson Matthews passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Wells, near Oleoak, Tuesday morning, February 7th. "Mr. Matthews was born near Oleoak, in this county, on November 8th, 1837, and his [sic] 84 years two months and twenty-nine days were spent in and around the land of his birth. About four months ago he suffered a general breakdown and lingered until last Tuesday morning. "He was a life-long Democrat and held an undisputed place in the politics of Barren county until a few years ago when he became less active in politics on account of his age. Aside from his political rank and his good citizenship he was very much a man of honor and integrity; his man [sic] that means much to his country was without question. "Mr. Matthews was a man of great intellect and of keen discernment and a power for good among his fellowmen. To his friends he was unflinching and unswering. He was a man that mean[t] much to his couty. His death was a loss to Barren county, and his life-long friends who today are in sorrow for their friend that has passed on to that great beyond. "Sixty years ago he was married to Miss Joicy Reid Stout. For nearly half a century they lived in this county near where they were born. His wife has been dead fifteen years. "The deceased is survived by five children; thirty-one grand children, and four great grandchildren. THe children are U. S. Matthews, W. A. Matthews, Don Matthews, and Mrs. Ed Wells, all living in Barren county; and E. M. Matthews of Hutcherson, Kansas. "Funeral services were conducted at the home of his daughter last Wednesday by Brother George Davidson, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Stout buying ground." A Friend.
