"Uncle Dink" William H. PERKINS - age 98 years, 1 month, 10 days

"Mr. William H. Perkins, familiarly known as "Uncle Dink" and one of the last 
Civil War veterans of this section, died at his home near Summer Shade last 
Thursday afternoon. Death was caused by infirmities of old age and 
complications. He was 98 years, 1 month and 10 days of age.

"He was a beloved and outstanding citizen and an unusually large crowd attended 
his last rites at Summer Shade Friday afternoon. The funeral was held at the 
Summer Shade Baptist Church at 3 p.m., the Rev. Ernest L. Dixon in charge. 
Interment followed in the Summer Shade Cemetery.

"Mr. Perkins was born in Barren county, in a portion later cut off for Metcalfe 
and except for three years he served in the Union army, during the Civil War, 
he had resided in and around Summer Shade. He was a first private in Company G, 
6th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers, commanded by Capt. Edward R. Phillips. He 
enlisted on August 1, 1862, and was discharged July 14, 1865, at Edgefield, 
Tenn. He was wounded during the battle of Chickamauga and later taken prisoner 
at Hopkinsville.

"Following the Civil War, Mr. Perkins returned to Summer Shade where he has 
been engaged in farming and the timber business since. Throughout his life, he 
had enjoyed good health and was stout, healthy, and jovial prior to being 
stricken with influenza a month ago. He was a man of high standing in his 
community, plain spoken, a man of his word, and a citizen that will be missed 
by his neighbors and friends.

"He was married to Miss Mary Word when a young man, and to that union were born 
ten children, five of whom survive: Mrs. S. F. Pedigo, Mrs. J. W. Shirley and 
Mr. E. H. Perkins, all of Summer Shade; Mr. Robert Perkins, of Clark's Hill, 
Ind., and Mr. Sam Perkins, of California. He was the last surviving member of 
his immediate family."
