Barber at his home in Salt Lick Friday, July 22, marked the passing of the last veteran of the Civil war on either side in Bath County. Mr. Barber, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on October 1, had been an invalid for several years and had been very feeble for some time prior to his death. A son of the late Captain George Barber and Mrs. Sarah Johnson Barber, he was born near Fairview, Fleming county, October 1, 1848. His father, a captain in the Union Army, formed a company in Bath and Fleming counties in 1864, in which Mr. Barber, then 15 years old, enlisted. He served under his father until the close of the conflict, when he received his discharge. The greater part of his life was spent in this county, where he became a leading figure in Republican political circles and several terms as magistrate of the Forge Hill district, representing that part of the county on the Bath fiscal court. Surviving him are three sons, Commander Ernest Barber, San Diego, Calif.; earl and Espy Barber of this county, and one daughter, Mrs. Jack Rice, of Forge Hill. He is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Marion Moore, of Forge Hill. Funeral services were held at the residence at Salt Lick Sunday afternoon, July 24, conducted by the Rev. R. T. Moore. Interment was in the family lot at Fairview cemetery, Fleming county.
