Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 00:18:43 -0400 From: "Elizabeth Smith" ********************************** Dies of Influenza at Camp Funston A telegram was received Thursday morning announcing the death at Camp Funston, Kansas, following an illness of Spanish Influenza, of Private James Reid, son of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Reid, who reside near Howard's Mill. Tuesday, the parents of the young man received word that he was in a dangerous condition and they immediately left for his bedside. They were en route when the telegram announcing his death was received and the uncle of the dead soldier telegraphed the camp authorities to prepare his body for burial and hold it pending the arrival of his parents. Young Reid had been in the army some time and was expecting early detail for overseas duty at the time of his death. He died for the cause for which America is fighting no less than the boys who with rifles and bayonets, face the Huns on the battlefield and his name along with those already and those yet to be added will be grave on scroll which shall forever list our hero dead. The community grieves with his parents and loved ones in the loss of a brave soldier and noble son. I do not have a date of death for Private James Reid. However from the appearance of the clipping (type and line separators) and clues in the obituary, I would assume that he died in the 1940's during WWII. I am not sure if the body was brought back to Kentucky. The Reid's and Keller's cemetery lots at Machpelah are not far from that of my mother, so the next time I visit, I will try to obtain a date.
