Irvin, 80, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. He was born in Hagan, Va., a son of the late Henry and Nora (Presley) Irvin. Before moving to Indiana, he was a high school teacher and basketball/baseball coach in Lee County, Va. (Jonesville High School and Thomas Walker High School). In 1960, he became a teacher and varsity baseball coach at Carmel High School, Carmel, Ind. In 1961, he was named the first principal of Carmel Elementary School. He later served as the curriculum director for Carmel Clay Schools, and was the assistant superintendent for Carmel Clay Schools for 16 years. After his retirement from Carmel Clay Schools, he served on the Carmel City Council for four years, and was the Hamilton County Veterans Affairs Officer. He was one of the first Carmel Police Commissioners and co-chairman of the building committee to construct the public swimming pool in Carmel. He was a member of Carmel United Methodist Church and the Carmel Lions Club. An Army veteran, he proudly served his country during World War II, including front-line combat duty for 513 days in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jerleen (Bledsoe) Irvin; son, Robert M. (Pamela) Irvin of Carmel; grandchildren, Jessica L. and Michael T. Irvin, also of Carmel; brother, Hubert Irvin of Noblesville, Ind.; and sister, Ann Mike of Middlesboro. The family will greet friends Tuesday, July 29, from 3-7 p.m. with funeral service at 7 p.m. at Leppert & Hensley Mortuary, Smith Carmel Chapel. A memorial service and entombment will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Green Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Middlesboro.
