Newell attended the Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford, Connecticut, and the Colonial School in Brussels, Belgium. Newell taught at Ecole Moyenne at Bolenge, in the Belgian Congo. Additional Comments: MIDDLESBORO — Newell Elizabeth Hobgood-Martin, 78, passed away Wednesday December 10, 2008, at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born November 5, 1930, in Lincoln, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Henry Clay Hobgood and Tobitha Alderson de Hobgood. A member of First Christian Church of Middlesboro, she had lived in what was then the Belgian Congo, Africa for 14 years, the daughter of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Missionaries. Her father was originally from Western Kentucky, her mother was a native of Mercer County, Ky. Upon her father’s arrival in the Congo in 1912, there was no written non-European language. In addition to English, she fluently spoke the Lonkundo-Lamongo, Lingala and French languages. She aught French, English and music in Africa, Canada, New York, Illinois, Florida and Kentucky. She is survived by the following members of her family: two children, Clay Arthur Martin, Lexington, Ky., and the Rev. Kathryn Martin (Rev. Robert) Thompson Portage, Wisc.; 20 grandchildren; two brothers, the Rev. Ben Clay Hobgood, Penney Farms, Fla., and the Rev. Chris Hobgood, Ocean Pines, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Middlesboro, with the Rev. Kathryn Martin Thompson and Pastor Stephen Earle presiding. Music will be provided by her family, and Larry and Karen Blondell. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Monday, at the First Christian Church, Middlesboro. Creech Funeral Home, Middlesboro, is in charge of all arrangements.
