Cardwell, June 12, 1940 * My mother asked Fannie Elliott Arrasmith Cardwell, her grandmother why Emily, Alva, Ethel and James Bradley all died on the same day.. She said they all died in the Johnston Flood and when they found Ethel, she was in a tree still clutching a piece of her mothers apron in her hands. Of course, the Johnston Flood was May 31, 1899. We felt it was probably an Ohio River flood on or around the dates of their death. To date, have not been able to determine the name and exact date of flood.
