Fellowes Family Bible Inside the front cover of this red, leather-bound Bible is a printed label with the name of "William Fellowes" beneath a coat of arms. The coat of arms is a standard one for Fellowes/Fellows as noted in "Fellows Family Records" by F. J. Carpenter, 1976. The Latin phrase in a banner below the shield reads: "JUSTUS ESTO ET NON METUE". In blue ink to the side and below William Fellowes' name are the handwritten words "to H D (or S?) Fellowes". On the inside of the first page is pasted a list of names and dates in an old script in brown ink on yellow-brown paper. This page is a page from another Bible as the text on the other side is faintly visible. The date "MDCCLXVII" (1767) can be made out. Crease marks on this page indicate that is was folded and "weathered", probably by being carried in a wallet or envelope before being pasted into the Bible. The edges of the paper are ragged and torn such that at the top and in one spot on the right hand side portions of the original text are incomplete. This page is pasted on to what appears to be a blank sheet of whiter paper which is in turn pasted onto the flyleaf of the Bible. Transcription of this page is as follows. (Poorly visible word, probably "Cornelius". Remainder of line missing from page.) "25 1764 was" (Remainder of line missing from page.) (I suspect the "---" following the dates indicates that the person had died when this page was written, probably around 1800.) On the facing page written in brown ink in large script is "William Fellowes Louisville Nov. 20, 1830". Below this is script thought to be the letters J F. (orT?). Ess (Ep?). (Possibly a reference to Jonathan Fellowes Esq., William's father.) As indicated on the title page, the Bible was published by N. & G. Guilford and Morgan & Sanxay. The name Cincinnati and the date of 1830 are shown. Between the New and Old Testaments are four pages of the "Family Record" The first page records marriages in two columns "MARRIAGES (First Column) Roxbury Mass., June 9th 1829 Tuesday William Son of Jona (Jonathon) and Elizabeth Fellowes to Caroline daughter of Charles & Hariet Davis of the former place. A consistent member of the Baptist Church for more than half a century. He illustrated his faith by his conduct, and met death in the full assurance of a glorious immortality." "FELLOWES - On Wednesday morning, May 12, at his residence, No. 570 Fifth avenue, William Fellowes, of Staten Island, in the 74th year of his age. Funeral at St. Bartholomew's Church, corner of 44th street and Madison Avenue, at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. New Orleans and Louisville papers please copy." (The year 1875 is written in pencil.) "FELLOWES - on Tuesday, October 4 1898 at his residence, No. 14 5th-ave., Birney Fellowes, son of the late William Fellowes. Funeral services at Grace Church, on Tuesday, October 6, at 10 o'clock." A loose newspaper clipping pinned to a page of the Bible is an obituary for Cornelius Fellowes. The words " 2 A.M. Dec 9th 1871" are written in pencil at the side of the clipping". A transcription of the obituary follows. "The Late Cornelius Fellowes. A very wide circle of warm friends was deeply pained yesterday to learn of the death of this old and excellent citizen and justly popular gentleman. It was but a few days since we met him, just on his return from New York, where, he informed us, he had made extensive arrangements for opening up a new business, that would have been of great local advantage here, and would have redounded largely to his credit and profit. He looked in excellent health, and spoke cheerfully and hopefully of the future. He was seized with diptheria almost immediately after this meeting; yesterday morning, at an early hour, he breathed his last; and yesterday afternoon his remains were borne to their last resting place. We knew the deceased long and well, and profess our inability to express all we would wish to say on this melancholy occasion. In the career of a merchant, whether successful or not, there is not much striking incident for the biographer's use. Mr Fellowes had been a merchant here for forty years. For very many years before the war, his stood among the first of our commercial firms, transacting an immense business over a wide extent of territory; and when the war came and prostrated him, as it did so many merchants, no one's calamity inspired more general sympathy than that which shattered the fortunes of Cornelius Fellowes. The spirit of the man, however, was not quelled. His kindly, generous nature was not chilled; his bright eye was clear and sparkling; his vigorous intellect as sound; his public sprit unbroken; his genial humor as playful; the grasp of his hand was as warm, as ever. He possessed that personal magnetism that made friends of all who approached him; and by his sterling, frank, manly qualities, he retained their friendship. Mr Fellowes was a native of Kentucky. He took an active and intelligent part in every enterprise conducive to the public interest. He was for a long time a director of the New Orleans and Jackson Railroad, and was a zealous member of other leading corporations - banking, insurance and others. In him the best qualities of our old New Orleans merchants, citizens and gentlemen were strikingly represented. We doubt if he had an enemy. No man had more warmly attached friends" On the penultimate page of the Bible are another set of inscriptions which tell a poignant story and hint at the dark side of our history. "Henry Son of Juliet born in Louisville Nov 7, 1836 died Nov 8, 1837 of Croup. Robert, Son of Juliet - born Sep 9, 1838. Died Nov 3rd 1839 Brain fever. First daughter of Juliet born October 16th 1840. Juliet, mother of the children mentioned(?) above died on 17 Nov, 1841 of consumption - She was the best servant we owned Emily, daughter of Sally, died February, 1836(?) aged 10 years, of consumption. Sarah, daughter of Polly died in Drummondville Co. Nov 1868 -- childbirth." Pinned to the back cover of the Bible is a newspaper clipping of a poem with the title "On the Death of Mr. John S. Williams, of Louisville, Ky. By Kate Harrington." At the bottom of the poem are the words "Prairie Cottage, Iowa". The clipping must be from a paper printed in June or July of 1853 as there is a portion of an article about the Gadsden Purchase beneath the poem and several by-lines with June dates. The clipping seems to be from a Louisville, Ky. newspaper. It is possible Wm. Fellowes knew Mr. Williams but I think it more likely that the poem was a reminder of his wife Caroline who died about one year earlier. The Bible also contains a note written in black ink on thick blue-grey linen paper. The note reads: "Dear Fellowes Here is the old family Bible - It belonged to your grandfather as you can see on the fly leaf. and the records of births, marriages, and deaths are very interesting. also the quaint illustrations. It seems to me that the proper place, for such a sacred book is in your beautiful home and in the care of two such people as you and B- It is a great pleasure to me to give it to you. I am sure Sister Hattie would like me to do it, you are the honored head of the family, and we all love you Always devotedly Etta" There is no indication of the date of this note. The people mentioned here are unidentified. Perhaps "Hattie" is Harriet D. Fellowes and "Etta" is Henrietta Lonsdale. The only other items in the Bible are several leaves.
