MARCUS COLLINS was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1813, the only child born to Marcus, Sr., and Elizabeth (Swing) Collins. Marcus Collins, Sr., a native of New York, emigrated to Cincinnati in 1817, was a brickmaker by trade, but is now dead. He was a son of Stephen Collins, of New York, who emigrated from England. Mrs. Collins was a daughter of Samuel and Mary (Murphy) Swing, of Pennsylvania. Our subject learned the trade of a mechanic, but after five years at that work went on the river as a laborer, in which he was engaged many years; he was captain of a boat and the owner of several boats, and during his steamboat career he had carrying contracts for the Government during the Mexican War. He now lives on his large and valuable farm opposite Aurora, Ind. In 1844 he married Miss Sarah Hoffman, of Cincinnati, who was born in 1825 and died in 1849. In 1853 Mr. Collins married Martha Norris, daughter of Joseph Norris, of Boone County, one of the oldest families in the State. Mr. Collins is a member of the Christian Church.
