Surname: Gaines, Watts, Huey, Bradford Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Boone Co. OWEN GAINES was born near Bullittsville, Boone Co., Ky., in January, 1824, and is the third in a family of ten children, born to James and Virginia (Watts) Gaines. James Gaines, a son of George Gaines of Virginia, was born in October, 1798, was a farmer by occupation, and died in 1872, a member of the Baptist Church. His wife was born in December, 1802, and died in 1882. George Gaines' father was Henry Gaines of Orange County, Va. The Gaineses spring from an English family, four brothers of whom came to the United States. Owen Gaines was reared on the farm, which occupation he has followed most of his life; he was engaged in the pork trade in Cincinnati, Ohio, for some time. He is the owner of 114 acres of well improved land on the Bullittsville and Dry Creek Pike in Boone County, where he lives. In 1858 he married Pauline Huey, daughter of William and Mary (Bradford) Huey, of Scott County, Ky., she was born in 1830, and is a member of the Baptist Church. To them have been born four children: Mary V., James W., Pendleton (deceased) and Amanda E. (deceased). James W. is now a practicing physician in Kansas City, Mo.
