SOUTHER, deceased. He was born in Boone County, Kentucky, near Cincinnati, April 27, 1814. His father was born in Virginia in 1776, and emigrated to Kentucky at an early day. He served in the War of 1812. Simon W. was a merchant, trading in various kinds of goods, which he ran down the river on flatboats. He came to Missouri in 1855, and settled on his present farm, containing 510 acres. In the following year he was married to Miss M. Thornton, daughter of George Thornton, who was one of the early settlers of Johnson County. Mr. S. was engaged in farming and stock raising, dealing largely in young cattle. He was once elected magistrate. He continued to reside on the old homestead until his death, which occurred in February 1874. He was an acceptable member of the Christian Church, at his death. His widow is still living and has five children: Geo. W., Fannie E., Thomas S., Annie M. and Theodosia M. Mrs. S., George and Annie are members of the Christian Church. James R.
