He was a native of Madison County, and the son of the late Luther and Rosa Bicknell Benton. Survivors are two brothers, James C. Benton , of Richmond and Luther B. Benton, of Columbus, GA; one sister, Eva (Steven)Elam, of Paris; and several nieces and nephews. Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen, April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BILLS Garland Moore Bills, 81, a farmer, a resident of Bourbon County, died Monday, April 20, 1998 at the home of his son Kevin Bills. He was born in Bourbon County, February 5, 1917 to the late James and Pearl Martin Bills. Survivors are a special friend, Juanita Bills; two sons and their wives, Garland Ray and Vickie Bills, Scott County; Kevin and Reda Boyd, Clark County; Denzil and Sharon Boyd, Harrison County; a sister, Christine Holloway, Cold Springs; 14 grandchildren, Opal and Brandon Bills, Kim Fields, Debbie Depew, Chris and Spring Bills, Jennifer Boyd, Tyree Boss, Asha Boyd, Sharac and Merissa Boyd, Helen and Constance Page and Jessica Green; two great grandchildren, Chase and Kegan Depew; four sisters in law, Helen Bills and Phyllis Judy, Harrison County; Kathlene Rankin and Nancy Earlywine, Bourbon County; two brothers in law, Clyde Earlywine and Buddy Rankin, Bourbon County. He was prededed in death by his first wife, Opal; a son, Emmett; a sister, Mary Garrison and two brothers, George and Clyde Bills. Burial was in the Jacksonville Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BURKHOLDER Anjolene Bates Burkholder, 45, of Boise, Idaho, died Monday, December 22, 1997 at her home of cancer. Interment was at Morris Hill Cemetery under the direction of Summers Funeral Home, Boise Chapel. Anjolene, daughter of Hazel Bates and the Late Robert Lee Bates Sr., was born in Paris, Kentucky March 31, 1952. Survivors include her husband, Reed, and their three children, Caitlin Olivia, Tyler Neuen and Trevor Madison Lee Burkholder, all at home; Hazel Bates, her mother; two sisters, Janice Gaunce First, Versailles and Ardith Lee Scott, Glencoe, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Lee Bates Sr., Paris, Kentucky and her brother Robert Lee Bates Jr., Lexington. Broadway, Carlisle, died Sunday, April 26, 1998 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She was born in Nicholas County to the late John and Matilda Dampier Shields and was the widow of Charles Stone and Mitch Cox. Survivors are two daughters, Elise Stone, Carlisle and Betty Clem, Paris; two granddaughters whom she raised, Brenda White, Moorefield and Judy Ring, Carlisle; a brother, Jay Shields, Paris; two sisters, Lucille Waugh, Paris and Flora Dee Klump, Cynthiana; eight other grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four sons, Charles Lee Jr., Johnnie, Earl Rennick and Jimmie Stone; a daughter, Mary Ethel Stone; four brothers, Cecil, Ray, Johnnie and Roy Shields; and three sisters, Agnes Hunt, Willie Ruth Fryman and Flossie George. Burial was in the Carlisle Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DOYLE Betty Jean Doyle, 70, Lexington, widow of David T. Doyle, died Wednesday; April 22, 1998 at Central Baptist Hospital. A native of Harrison County, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Georgia Hollar Fowler. Survivors include two sons, Clinton Land, Lexington and Robert T. Doyle Paris; a daughter, Joyce William, Cynthiana; eight grand children; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Fowler, Lexington and J. T. Fowler, Gulfport, MS; a sister, Sue Fowler Rue, Lexington; and several neices and nephews. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HIGDON Georgia Ann Parsons Higdon, 71, of Boynton Beach FL., formerly of Paris, KY, widow of Roy Higdon and James Parsons, died Wednesday, January 28, 1998 at her residence. A native of Paris, KY, she was born September 13, 1927 to the late Charles Calvin and Margaret Daisy Houston Insko. She retired from the Paris Cemetery as the Superintendent and was a member of the Paris First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister, Leona Florence, Paris KY; a brother Russell Insko Sr. of Boynton Beach FL; two nephews, Ted Florence Paris and Russell Insko Jr. of Palmpay Beach FL; two nieces Marilyn Sue Colvel of Georgia and Charlene Henderson of albuguerque, NM. Burial was in the Paris Cemetery Bourbon County Citizen February 4, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HUNTER Frank Hunter, 65, of 121 Leer Dr., Millersburg, husband of Janice Cameron Hunter, died Thursday, April 23, 1998 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Cooper Dr. in Lexington. A native of Nicholas County, he was the son of the late Edwin and Elsie Fryman Hunter. Other survivors are three sons, Barry (Judy) Hunter, Paris; Ricky Hunter, Millersburg; and Robbie (Peggy) Hunter, Carlisle; two brothers, William R. and Edwin "Ted" Hunter, Carlisle; a sister, Mollie Mae Bacot, Flemingsbur; eight grandchildren, Stacey, Wendall, Chad, Rob, Keith, Jason, Rick and Janice Hunter; four great-grand children, Aleshia, Ethan, Josh and Crystal Hunter. Burial was in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Fleming County. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JONES Elsie Gray Jones, 72, of 534 Vine Street, Apt. 3, Paris, KY widow of William A. "Buck" Jones, died at 8:40 am Tuesday April 21, 1998 at her residence. A native of Fleming County she was born May 11, 1925, daughter of the late Oliver Harrison and Eula McCord Gray. Survivors are four brothers, Wayne Gray, Paris; Layne Gray, Carlisle; Paul H. Gray, Ewin; and Jackie Gray Swinchart, Sante Fe, TX and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were conducted at Elizabille Cemetery, Elizaville, KY. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JUDY Edgar M. "Ted" Judy, 86 of Vimont Lane, Millersburg, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998 at the Bourbon Community Hospital, Paris. A native of Harrison County, KY he was born October 14, 1911, a son of the late Virgil and Laura Florence Judy. Survivors include his wife, Eloise McCauley Judy; three sons, Russell Max Judy, Jasper, AL; Joe L. Judy, Cynthiana; William Virgil Judy, Bradenton, FL; two sisters, Louanna Marsh and Virgie Marshall, both of Cynthiana; eight grandchildren, Melissa Hardage, Michael Bruce Judy, Lee Alan Judy, Gayle Noble, Kyle Judy, Ted Ron Judy, Kacia Judy, Daniel Judy; and seven great grand children. Burial was in the Battle Grove Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ KIRBY Della Payton Kirby, 83, 2313 Glenview Road, Paris, widow of Henry R. Kirby, died at 9:00am Friday, January 30, 1998 at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. A native of Anderson County, she was born September 27, 1914, the daughter of the late John and Mary Woods Payton. Survivors are a grandson, Dr. Philip E. Prater and his wife, Mary Alice, Bourbon County; a granddaughter, Leslie Ann Prater, Paris; a son-in-law, James E. Prater, Paris; three great grandchildren, James Ross, Matthew Edward and Jonathan Daniel Prater; four sisters, Sarah Snow, Louise Payton and Ida Mitchell, Frankfort and Geneva Whitehouse, Louisville; a brother Les Payton, Lexington; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Clay Kirby "Libby" Prater. Burial will be in the Bluegrass Memorial Gardens, Lexington. Bourbon County Citizen, February 4, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAWHORN Aimee Louise Burris Lawhorn, 87, 295 Highway A-1-A #501 Satellite Beach, FL, formerly of Bourbon County, widow of Earl Beckham Lawhorn, died Saturday, April 18, 1998. A native of Bourbon County, she was born october 16, 1910, the daughter of the late Finley Francis and Sarah Elizabeth Hopkins Burris. Survivors are a son, Douglas A. Lawhorn, Satellite Beach, FL, seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Burial was in the Paris Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen, April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LETCHER Clay (Robie) Letcher, 63, of 518 East Main St., Carlisle, twin brother of Faye Letcher, died Tuesday, January 27, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. A native of Nicholas County, he was a son of the late Earl and Minnie Vaughn Letcher. Other survivors are brother, Eugene (Ruby) Letcher and Ronnie (Lillian) Letcher, both of Carlisle, Estill (Lois) Letcher, Little Rock, Arkansas; Gaylord (Margie) Letcher, Louisville; William (Shirley) Letcher, Jeffersonville, IN; other sisters, Marie (Charles) Crawford and Wilma McClanahan, both of Carlisle; and Mary Della (Tommy) Gillespie, Bourbon County; several nieces and nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews and special friends. Hinkle Logan passed away at her home on January 7 1998 in Frankfort. She was the daughter of the late Russell and Effa Crouch Hinkle. She is survived by one son, Eddie and Teresa Logan; five grandchildren of Frankfort; one brother , Maurice (Pete) Hinkle; and one sister Shirley Kleuh of Lexington. A 40 year resident of Salem, he was born in Paris, Bourbon Country, KY and granduated from the University of KY. Survivors are his wife, Jean (Laurenson) whom he married in Venezuela in 1949; Gregory and Mardel Skillman of Eugene; Jeffrey Skillman and Marcy LaMont of Seattle; Andrea Skillman, Laurie Skillman and Erhard Chorle of Chicago; Kate Skillman of Oberlin College, OH; David Skillman of Colorado College, Colorado; and Frank Skillman of Ft. "Jake" Smart, 83 of 1208 Millersburg Road, husband of Mabel Ruddell Smart, died Sunday, February 1, 1998 at the VA Hospital in Lexington, KY. A native of Nicholas County, KY he was born Decemb er 13, 1915 to the late John Carson and Fannie Palmer Smart. Survivors other than his wife are a son, John Carson Smart III of Memphis TN; daughter-in-law Bunty Smart; granddaughter, Dawn and Bill Farrar of Collinsville, VA; grandson, David and Kelly Smart of Memphis TN; a sister, Mabel Toohey, Paris; a brother Palmer Smart, Maysville, KY; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Joe Smart. Burial will follow in the Carlisle Cemetery. A native of Pekin, IL, she was born January 30, 1973 to Jerry and Sarah Katherine Judy Bryant. Other than her husband and parents, she is survived by a brother, Jeffrey Bryant of Greenville, S.C. and a grandfather, Norman Judy of Millersburg, KY. Burial was in the Millersburg Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SPARKS Emma Hildreth Sparks, 84, wife of Houston Sparks, died Saturday, April 25, 1998 at her residence. She was born in Nicholas County to the late Arthur and Bessie Curtis Sparks and was a member of the East Union Christian Church. Other survivors are a son, Harry Sparks, Carlisle; two daughters, Sue Turner, Millersburg and Mary Peck, Carlisle; two brothers, Alton Brierly, Independence and Alyette Brierly, IL; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two sons, William and Tommy Sparks. Burial was in the Carlisle Cemetery. Bourbon County Citizen April 29, 1998 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ STEELE Brice Steele Jr., 78 23ll Winchester Rd. retired Lt. Colonel, US Air Force for 26 years, died at 6:32 pm. Thursday January 29, 1998 at his residence. A native of Paris, he was born February 12 1919 a son of Brice and Frieda Weidley Steele. Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Jean Hadden Steele, Paris; a grandson, Brice SteeleIV, Grighton CO; a granddaughter Sabrina Cillescan, Mesa AZ; daughter in law Kathryn Baker Steele, Northglenn. CO; several nieces and nephews and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Brice Steele III. Burial was in the North Middletown Cemetery.
