As a young man he was engaged in the river trade between Pittsburgh and New Orleans. In 1810 he was one of the first purchasers of lots in the new town of Guyandotte, and floated a house from Gallipolis, Ohio, to Guyandotte, and put it on his lot. He lived in Guyandotte sixteen years, was a successful business man, being interested in a store, a tannery, a shoe and saddle shop, saw and grist mill, a distillery, and a carding mill. He was a Whig and a Presbyterian. In 1836 he bought the Mark Russell farm which lay between 11th and 14th Streets and built a brick house which fronted on the old pike at a point now in the alley between 5th and 6th Avenues and 12th and 13th Streets, but at that time was the forks of the road and a favorite stopping place for drovers en route east from Kentucky with cattle and hogs. His family were Ann, born 1819, married R. C. Poage of Ashland, Kentucky; Eliza, born 1820, died 1856, married T. L. Jordan in 1855; George, born 1822, died 1900, moved to Benton County, Missouri; William, born 1824, died 1893, moved to Benton County, Missouri; James, born February 22, 1827, died January 18, 1895, married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel W. Johnston, and to this union were born: Willie, who married J. K. Oney, and Georgella, who married W. H. H. Holswade; Sarah, born 1829, died 1895, married J. Harvey Poage and inherited the home place from her father and resided there during their lives; (the old house which was pulled down a few years ago was then known as the Poage house). Thomas, born 1832, died 1864, lived in Ashland, Kentucky; John, born 1837, married Drusilla, a daughter of Edward Wright and lived in the town of Gallahersville, now a part of the city of Huntington.
