Mr. Thornbury was born March 14, 1946, in Williamson, W.Va., a son of the late Cecil and Nancy Runyon Thornbury. He lived in Belfry until moving to Westwood in 1959. Brice was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Birmingham, Ala. and Ashland. He was a 1964 graduate of Fairview High School, where he played basketball. He graduated in 1968 from the University of Southern Mississippi, where he attended on a full basketball scholarship. Upon graduation he returned to Ashland and became a math teacher and basketball coach at Boyd County High School. He later retired after many years of service at Boyd County High School as principal. Following his retirement, Brice returned to work for five more years as principal at the Ramey Home. Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Peggy Menshouse Thornbury; son, Matt Thornbury and his wife, April; granddaughter, Maija Smith; grandson, Matthew Thornbury II, all of Ashland; daughter, Lori Thornbury Hassig and her husband, Brad; granddaughter, Lauren Hassig, twin grandsons, Bridon Dell Hassig and Christian Steele Hassig, all of Birmingham, Ala.; sister, Mary Ann Crance, of Ashland; nephew, William Jack Wright and his wife, Kristie of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and a host of extended family members and friends. A celebration of Brice’s life will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1930 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, because of his dedication to the students and staff of Boyd County Public Schools, donations may be made to the Brice Thornbury Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Boyd County Board of Education, 1104 McCullough Drive, Ashland, KY 41102. Brice’s dear friends and colleagues will serve as pallbearers, Andy Ballash, Fred Faulkner, Phil Pratt, Mickey Rice, Bob Sparks and Clyde Stewart.
