He was a longtime employee of the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Durham, N.C., where he was a clinical psychiatrist. He also was a professor emeritus at Duke University. After his retirement, he worked in New Zealand and for Staffcare in Irving, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Janice Woford Hammett, formerly of Danville; a daughter, Jennifer Owens of Chesnee, S.C.; two stepsons, Hughes Helm of Hendersonville, N.C., and Miles Helm of Paris, France; a brother, Wayne Hammett of Rock Hill, S.C.; a sister, Ruth Cross of Cross, S.C.; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen United Methodist Church. Cremation Society of the Carolinas is in charge of arrangements.
