Born March 19, 1918, in Viper, he was a son of the late George Matt and Eliza Combs Knuckles. He was the widower of Annabel Stephenson Knuckles. He taught high school English in Troy, Ohio, Orlando, Fla., and Louisville. After retiring, he served as a substitute teacher at Danville and Boyle County high schools until he was 80. He was a graduate of Union College and had attended Centre College where he played football and was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He served in the Army Air Force in Aleutian Islands during World War II where he earned the rank of technical sergeant. He was a member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church where he taught the Anglers Sunday school class. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Education Association, and Danville Kiwanis Club. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Franklin Lodge No. 14 in Troy, Ohio, and Kosair Shriners in Louisville. He was a Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include a son, Vernon Vaughn Knuckles Jr. of Cincinnati; a daughter, Ann Kathleen Knuckles Barbour of Hanover, Ind.; and a sister, Juanita Pence of Cincinnati. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.
