Obituary of R. A. Nelson 1876 Boyle County The Kentucky Advocate, published in Danville on 5 May 1876 to be examined in the newspaper files at the W.T.Young Library, University of Kentucky-Lexington: "Death.- Of Pneumonia, at his residence in this county, on Friday last, Dr. R.A. Nelson, aged 71 years. The deceased was a minister of the Baptist Church, and also a physician. He came from Virginia, and had been living in this county 38 years. We learn that he was a very worthy and exemplary citizen. His remains were buried in the old Providence Burial Grounds on Saturday, after appropriate services by Eld. W.P.Harvey." Comments: Dr. Robert Andrew Nelson was born in Hanover County, Virginia June 11, 1805, He was the son of the Rev. Peter Carr Nelson (1757-1827)and his wife Nancy Lawrence Nelson (1769-1814). Dr. Nelson graduated from William and Mary College and the Medical College of Maryland in Baltimore. (See William and Mary Quarterly (1), Vol. 15, pp.242ff. The ancestry of Dr. Nelson derives from the emigrant Captain/Surgeon Edward Nelson, "son of James Nelson, Esq., of Essex County, near London, England...[he] was born 1690."(See "Nelson Family Records-Hanover County, VA" in the custody of the Virginia Historical Society, Richmond, VA., an account of which may be found in the Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol.16 (January 1978), pp. 14-15.) My descent is through his son John Lawrence Nelson (1844-1897) and wife Margaret Bell Stewart (1861-1949) of Clover Bottom, Woodford County, Kentucky. Their son Robert Elgin Nelson, Sr. (1893-1979) was my father. I have two brothers: Dr. Robert Elgin Nelson, Jr. (1923-) of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Dr. James Graham Nelson (1929-) of Madison, Wisconsin.
