Burial will be in Robinson Road Cemetery in Burgin. She died Tuesday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born April 8, 1921, in Danville, she was the daughter of William D. and Nora F. Smith. She attended high school in Danville and received her bachelor and master's degrees from North Carolina Central University. She was an active member of St. James AME Church, where she was lay president for nearly 15 years. She had been a member of the executive board of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. As a member of St. James AME Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., she was director of Christian education and served as trustee, steward and class leader. She taught four years at Lincoln Institute in Kentucky and taught business education for 20 years at Atkins and Parkland Sr. high schools in Winston-Salem. She served as chairperson of business education at Parkland. She was active in the Second Episcopal District and served four terms as a general conference delegate as well as first and second vice president for the Western North Carolina Lay Organization. Survivors include a brother, Ralph Beard Smith of Danville; two nephews; and two nieces. Visitation is from 11 a.m. Saturday until time for the funeral at the church. Smith-Jackson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
