RUTLEDGE Many years elapsed following the death of Samuel Freeman Miller before another Iowan was named to the United States Supreme Court. Finally, in 1943, Wiley Blount Rutledge, a former Dean of the Law School of the State University of Iowa, was named Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Born in Cloverport, Kentucky, on July 20, 1894, Rutledge received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1914, and his LL.B. from the University of Colorado in 1922. After teaching law in the University of Colorado and Washington University at St. Louis, Rutledge came to Iowa in 1935 to serve as Dean of the Law School at the State University of Iowa. In 1939 he was named Associate Justice of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for Washington, D. C. Four years later President Roosevelt elevated Wiley B. Rutledge to the highest court in the land, where he served with distinction until his untimely death on September 10, 1949. Rutledge loved Iowa with all his heart, and Iowans loved him with equal fervency. He maintained his residence and club memberships in Iowa City. The summer, 1950, issue of the Iowa Law Review contained a symposium to the memory of Wiley B. Rutledge. The contributors to this significant volume were Hugo L. Black, Fred M. Vinson, Irving Brant, W. Willard Wirtz, Victor Brudney and Richard F. Wolfson, Nathaniel L. Nathanson, Fowler Harper, Albert Abel, and Howard Mann.
