Then there was private ground a top a large hill on the Oglesby farm west end. It was to be used for family only, but thru the years more and more citizens were buried there-Scott's grave yard behind the old school had served its purpose. Then in 1828-29 Col David R. Murray established his family grave yard. As the town grew it was necessary to have more grounds. So Col Murray reserved enough space for his own family and decided to open his personal ground to the public, as it was so much needed. In 1829 the Colonel deed his Murray grave yard to the town. The 30 years that intervened the most influential families filled it to capacity. Seeing the need Col Murray and other spiritual members in corporated the Cloverport Cemetery in 1869. The petition was granted with the following directors, Col David R. Murray, Sr; Wm D. Bowmner, Dr. A. L. Simons; A. B. Skillman; R. L. Newsom, R. R. Pierce; John Walters; Wm Vest' Wm H. Webb; Philo Duncan; and Jacob M. Webb. Additional Comments: Information courtesy of Jan Pate and the Cloverport History Museum.
