Chenault et al, No. 371.688 On this 14 day of November, 1906 at Custer, County of Breckenridge, State of Kentucky before me, A. B. Tarwater a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared James. W. Brown, who being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogations propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I am 57 years of age; my post office address is Custer, Breckenridge Co. KY. Occupation, Farmer. I am a son of Campbell Brown who served in the 27th KY Inf during the Civil War. I do not remember the company. I do not remember the date of his enlistment and discharge. I do not think my father ever served in any other organization. Father came home on a furlough and within a few days he took down with the measles and before he got entirely over the measles his time was up and he went back to the Army. I do not remember how long he was home on furlough, but I think was about 30 days. I do not remember that he was at home but once on furlough. I think he was taking the measles when he came on the furlough. I do not remember what year it was that father was home on furlough and had the measles. I cannot say what Doctor treated him. It is more than likely that it was Dr. Warfield. I do not know of any one now living that visited father when he had the measles. When father went to the Army he broke up house keeping and we children went to my grandfather’s Frazier Horsley. Father came there when he came home from the Army on furlough. The Horsley’s are all dead unless Green Horsely is living. My father told me he was never well after he had the measles. Father died, I think father died in February 1870. Q: What was the cause of your father’s death? Ans: He died with something like Consumption. It was thought that the measles settled on his lungs and caused his death. His family were a strong healthy people, and there was no Consumption in the family. Father was a strong man when he went in the Army. I was present when father died. He died very easy. Just seemed to quit breathing. Father had a cough and spit up phlegm and just gradually got weaker until he died. I think Dr. Frank treated my father some during his last illness. I could name a number of persons who visited my father about the time he died and during his last illness, but they are nearly all dead. I am pretty sure Thomas Northern was present. Q: How long did your father have the cough and lung trouble? Ans: From the time he came back from the Army. He had a cough and was weak and no account when he came back from the Army and was never able to do much work and gradually grew weaker until he died, and was very poorly for about a year before he died. His whole trouble seemed to be from his cough and disease of lungs. I do not remember it, if he had any diarrhea or disease of stomach. No sire I do not know whether he was ruptured or not. My father first married Nancy Horsley. She was my mother. She had five children by my father. Two of them were under 16 years old when my father died. They were Calloway and Georgia Ann. I cannot state the date of Calloway’s birth, but I am pretty sure he was born in the month of Nov and I think in the year 1855 or 1856. My sister Georgia A is dead. I did have the family record which was in my father’s family Bible giving the dates of birth, but someone came here and got the leaves from the Bible and I don’t know what became of the record. Someone got the record for use in this pension claim. Q: Did your half sister Amanda A. Chenault ever get a copy of the family record showing the dates of birth of the children? Ans: I remember something about sending her a copy of the record. My mother Nancy died just before the beginning of the Civil War. I think about 1859. I was present when she died, and remember the fact of her death. Father next married Laura Whitworth. She died with Typhoid Fever just a few weeks after they married. They ran off and got married in Cincinnati, Ohio. He married her right after he was discharged from the Army. Father next married Martha Adkisson and lived with her until he died. He had one child by Martha, named Amanda Alice. She was about a year old. James W.
