The marker reads: In the autumn of 1816 the family of Abraham Lincoln, then seven years old, migrating to Indiana, rested and recuperated about three weeks in a cabin that stood near here. Local residents gave them food. Lincoln’s route in Kentucky started near Hodgenville and went through Elizabethtown, Vince Grove, Harned, Hardinsburg to Cloverport to a river ferry. Lincoln traveled by ox cart. Colonel David R. Murray was said to have directed the Lincoln family to a vacant family to rest and seek shelter. Years later as President, Lincoln retold the story of his trip from Kentucky to Indiana and the Colonel confirmed the story. Lincoln also told of taking a Gerry led by Jacob Weatherholt across the Ohio River at Joeville (later called Cloverport). The ferry was a raft of logs and held the cart, a canoe took the family across, and the ox and cow were made to swim across to Indiana. Ferryman Jacob Weatherholt allowed them to camp on land that he owned across the river in Tobinsport before continuing their travels to the area of their land grand near Vincennes, Ind. These stories are confirmed by written affidavits of relatives of him as well as witnesses of the ferry ride in Cloverport. Stories of the Lincoln trip through Breckinridge County became cherished history for the families who made contact with them and proudly retold for generations.
