He was born in Breckinridge County, February 2, 1923, son of the late Robert Carlton and Ella Mae Shannon Eskridge, and was a farmer. Mr. Eskridge is survived by six brothers; William H. Eskridge, Cloverport, James A. Eskridge, Guthrie, Clarence E. and John S. Eskridge, Route #2, Hardinsburg, Robert C. Eskridge, Mineral Wells, Texas and George O. Eskridge, Hopkinsville; and one sister, Mabel P. Eskridge, Dawson Springs. Graveside services are at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 2 at Ammons Cemetery, Ammons. Visitation will be at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home at 6 p.m., Wednesday, October 2. Charles W. Mercer, Sr. 1923 - 1997 Charles W. Mercer, Sr., age 74, of Brandenburg, died Saturday, September 27 at his residence. Mr. Mercer was born on March 23, 1923 in Metcalfe County, son of the late John Henry Mercer and Irma Rose Burns Mercer. He was a retired welder and a veteran of World War II. Mr. Mercer is survived by three daughters; Miss Sandra R. Mercer; Ellettsville, IN, Mrs. Nancy L. Hayden, West Point, and Mrs. Charlene A. Kendall, Louisville; son, Charles W. Mercer, Jr., Brandenburg, sister, Mrs. Marie Jeanette, Valley Station, brother, Roy A. Mercer, Brandenburg, mother-in-law, Mrs. Ella L. Marcum officiating. Burial was in Raymond Cemetery, with the Jenkins Funeral Home, Brandenburg, in charge. Eleonore H. "Ellie" Schuring 1919 - 1997 Eleonore H. "Ellie" Schuring, age 78, a Michigan native, living in Lodiburg, died Thursday, September 24, 1997 at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. She was born May 17, 1919, in Cooke County, IL, the daughter of Albert H. Schuring and Christine Ford. She was retired from the A & P Store in Detroit, MI and attended the Lutheran Church. Ms. Schuring is survived by a niece and nephew, Sayne and Sally Meyer of Lodiburg, with whom she had lived the past five years; three sisters, Gladys Wood, Lodiburg and Esther Lamz and Bernice Moeller, both of Illinois; and several neices and nephews. Services were held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 27 at the chapel of the Alexander Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold James officiating. Burial was in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Lodiburg with the Alexander Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Bennie Pack, Gene Meyer, Kevin Meyer, Donnie Mills, Joe Hardesty and Michael Fetch. Charlie Mae Cooper 1900 - 1997 Charlie Mae Cooper, age 97, of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, September 27, 1997 at Woodland Terrace Health Care Facility. She was born in Breckinridge County, June 16, 1900 and was a Jehovah's Witness for 64 years. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in deth by her husband, Preston Combs Cooper in 1977. Mrs. Cooper is survived by two sons, Charles H. Cooper of Sun City, FL, and Preston Ray Cooper of Indianapolis, IN; three daughters, Edna Messinger and Shirley Cooper, both of Elizabethtown and Frances Hurst of Mt. Washington; seven grand- children, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service scheduled at a later date. Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Art Schultz 1916 - 1997 Art Schultz, age 81, of Hardinsburg, died Wednesday, September 24, 1997 at Breckinridge Memorial Nursing Facility. He was born in Joliet, IL on February 16, 1916, son of the late Arthur A. and Hilda Carlson Schultz, was a retired fireman with Elliott, Joliet and Eastern Railroad Company, after 40 years of service with the company, and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. One son, Denny Schultz pre-deceased him. Mr. Schultz is survivied by his wife, Opal Probus Schultz of Hardinsburg; son Jerry Schultz Ryan of Garden City, MI; daughter, Sharon Utley of Livonia, MI: seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and a sister Lorraine Welter of Joliet, IL. Services were at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 27 at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial was in Eveleigh Cemetery near Leitchfield. Elmina E. Miller 1908 - 1997 Elmina E. Miller, age 89, of Hardinsburg, died Saturday, September 27, 1997 at Medco Center of Hardinsburg. She was born March 13, 1908 in Breckinridge County, and was a member of the New Clover Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Miller. Mrs. Miller is survived by three neices, Mrs. Juanita Jackson and Mrs. Yvonne Ryan, both of Hardinsburg and Mrs. Eula May Embrey of Owensboro; and three nephews, James Godfrey Miller of Reo, IN, Franklin Miller, and Joe Miller, both of Hardinsburg. Marilyn Lavonna Eskridge 1938 - 1997 Marilyn Lavonne Eskridge, age 59, of Harned, died Sunday, September 28, 1997 at Breckinridge Memorial Nursing Facility. She was born in Breckinridge County on May 27, 1938, daughter of Irene Eskridge of Harned, and the late Silas Eskridge, and was a homemaker. She was pre-deceased by brother, Dale Eskridge. Ms. Eskridge is survived by her mother, Irene Eskridge of Harned; and two nephews. Services were held Tuesday, September 30 at 11 a.m. at the Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial was in the Harned Cemetery in Harned. Joseph William Conder 1941 - 1997 Joseph William Conder, age 56, died Sunday, September 28, 1997 at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital. He was born in Breckinridge County on April 14, 1941, son of Eliza Conder and the late Millard Conder, was a self-employed painter and furniture refinisher and a member of Hardinsburg United Methodist Church. Mr. Conder is survived by his mother, Eliza Conder of Hardinsburg; one son, Tim Conder of Lewisport, daughter, Angie Gilliam of Lewisport; four grandchildren; brother, Frank Conder of Hardinsburg and three sisters, Anna Stilwell of Hardinsburg, Margaret Jarboe of Harned and Judy Fletcher of Louisville. Duke 1931-1997 Franklin K. Duke, 66-year-old Hardinsburg resident, died at Breck- inridge Memorial Hospital on Tues- day, October 7,1997. He was born May 18, 1931 in Breckinridge County, a son of the late Garland Dee Duke and Sarah Nancy Davis Duke. He was employed with the Sanitation department of the City of Hardinsburg, and was a member of the Cloverport Wesleyan Church. Mr. Duke was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Duke, and two brothers, John and Bill Duke. Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Beulah Mae Hinton 1920-1997 Mrs. Beulah Mae Hinton, age 77, died Monday, October 6, 1997 at her home in Cloverport. She was born September 26, 1920 in Brick- inridge County. Mrs. Hinton was retired from the General Electric plant at Tell City, IN, and was a member of the Cloverport Baptist Church. A daughter, Geraldine Clark, preceded her in death in l940. Mrs. Hinton is survived by her husband, Virgil Hinton; a son, Ellis R. Clark, Richmond, VA; a step- daughter, Saundra Bishop, Owens- boro; two sisters, Alice Ray Alien, Cloverport, and Mildred Leathern, Owensboro; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a step-grand- child, and two step-great-grandchil- dren. Gullett, age 91, of Cloverport, died Wednesday, Octo- ber 8, 1997, at Breckinridge Memo- rial Hospital. Bom in Breckinridge County on March 26, 1906, Mrs. Gullett was the daughter of Mose and Hannah Quiggins Jackson. She was a retired waitress, was a mem- ber of the Breckenridge Street United Methodist Church, was a member of the Senior Citizen's Center, the Re- tired Senior Volunteer Program, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Her hus- band, William S. Gullett, preceded her in death on March 1, 1966, also a son Clifford F. Basham on June 25, 1991, and a grandson. Billy Basham. Survivors are a son, Willard Basham; daughters-in-law, Evidine Basham and Lola Basham; three grandchildren, Detta Pile and Ron Marshall of Hardinsburg, and Rich- ard P. Denzil Neff 1921-1997 Denzil Neff, age 76, of Hardins- burg, died Saturday, October 11, 1997, at Medco Center of Hardins- burg. Born July 31,1921 in Wolfe Co., Mr. Neff was the son of the late Leslie B. and Maude Howard Neff. He was a heavy equipment operator and a farmer. He was born in Breckinridge County January 28, 1923, the son of the late Hubert and Dessie Beavin Elder. Mr. Elder was retired from Connonwealth Alumi- num, a veteran and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hawesville. A son, Charles Edmond (Chuckie) Elder, preceded him in death in 1953. Born May 23,1911 in Breckinridge County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Matilda Basham Smiley. Mrs. Nottingham was a housewife and a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church. Her husband, Wade Nottingham, preceded her in death. Mrs. Nottingham is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Leslie Orville Osborne 1923-1997 Leslie Orville Osborne, age 74, of Leitehfield, died Monday, October 13, 1997, at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center. Born May 12, 1923 in Breckinridge County, he was the son of James Willis and Susan Eliza- beth Wheatley Osborne. He was re- tired from General Electric, was an Army veteran of WW II, and at- tended Clinton Street Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Josephine Prewitt Osborne; a son, James Alien Carwile, Clarkson; a brother, J.W. Osborne, Dale, IN; two sisters. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1997 Rebecca Lynn Oakes 1988 - 1997 Rebecca Lynn Oakes, age 9, of Thomasville, GA, formerly of Louisville, died there Friday, October 17, 1997. She was born in Louisville, March 18, 1988, a daughter of Charles Ernest Oakes and Laura Barden, of Thomasville. She was a fourth grade student at Cross Creek Elementary School. Survivors other than her parents are a sister, Shelly Elizabeth Barden, Thomasville, GA; and three brothers, James Barden, Thomasville, Chad Oakes and Adam Oakes, Louisville. Burial was in Boston City Cemetery under the direction of Whiddon Funeral Home, Thomasville. October 29, 1997 ROBERT J. JENNINGS 1921-1997 Robert J. (Jeff) Jennings, age 76, of Stephensport, died Wednesday, October 27, 1997, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. Born April 25, 1921, in Breckinridge County, Mr. Jennings was a son of the late Charles Thomas and Beulah Jennings. He was retired from the postal service and worked as clerk at the Hawesville Post Office, was a retired farmer, a member of the Stephensport United Methodist Church, and was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ruth P. Jennings, on March 5, 1990. Survivors include a son, Glenn Jennings, Stephensport; a sister, Edith Singley, Norris, TN; grandchild, Katie Jennings, Stephensport, and a stepgrandchild, Richard Crask, Stephensport. Services were held Saturday, October 25 at Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport, with the Rev. Dean Weber officiating. MASON 1907-1997 Walter L. Mason, age 90, of Lewisport, died Wednesday, October 22, 1997, at Heartland Villa in Lewisport. Born June 28, 1907 in Evansville, IN, Mr. Mason was a son of the late William Thomas and Laura Adeline Newman Mason. He was retired from American Olean Tile Co., was a member of the Lewisport United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and held several church offices, was a former secretary of the Farm Bureau, enjoyed farming, woodworking and antique furniture refinishing. He was preceded in death by a son, William Louis in 1963, five brothers, Floyd Franklin, James, Orville Thomas, George and Albert, and a sister, Mary. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Lila Mason; a daughter, Ann Mason Scott, Phoeniz, AZ; a brother, Arthur Mason, San Diego, CA: five nieces and nephews, and seven great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 25 at the Lewisport United Methodist Church with the Revs. J. Alton Lawhorn and David Oaks officiating. Burial was in Lewisport Cemetery under the direction of Taylor-Raymond-Spear Funeral Home in Lewisport. RAYMOND A. McCUBBINS 1938-1997 Raymond (Ray) Allen McCubbins, age 59, New Brumfels, TX, died Tuesday, October 21, 1997, in Brumfels. He was formerly of Cloverport and Louisville. He was born in Cloverport on June 28, 1948, a son of the late Lawrence William McCubbins. Survivors are his mother and step-father, Catherine and Tom Schroerlucke, Cloverport; two brothers, Larry and Pat McCubbins, both of Owensboro; a sister, Betty Harris, Locust Hill; two stepsisters, Bonita Brown, Taos, NM, and Janice Webner, Clinton, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by the Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Brumfels. There was no visitation or service. MRS. AUDREY STITH 1930-1997 Mrs. Audrey Mae Fisher Stith, age 67, of Guston, died Tuesday, October 14, 1997, at her residence. Born February 8, 1930 in Jefferson County, Mrs. Stith was a daughter of the late John Stanley Fisher, Sr. and Anna Mae Smith Fisher. She was a 1948 graduate of New Albany High School and attended the University of Kentucky. She was a past recording secretary of the Ancestral Trails Historical Society, was an active member of Hill Grove Baptist Church, a past recipient of the Meade County Band Booster of the Year award and also the Meade County Fair Person of the Year award. A brother, John S. Fisher, Jr., preceded her in death. Mrs. Stith is survived by her huadband, Thomas J. Stith; five sons, Mitchel and Jeff Stith, both of Guston, Whitney Stith, Union, Kevin Stith, Louisville, Kyle Stith, Lexington; daughter-in-law, Gina Stith, Union; two sisters, Betty F. Hauber, Louisville, and Jo Ann F. Koehler, New Albany, IN; two step-grandchildren, Lauren and Brandon Marsee, Union; also aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. MRS. RUBY CHRISTINE DOWELL 1934-1997 Mrs. Ruby Christine Dowell, age 72, died Monday, October, 27, 1997, at her home on Rt. 1, Irvington. Mrs. Dowell was born November 29, 1934 in Bowling Green, a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Maude Emmerton Roundtree. She was a retired nurses aide from Medco Center of Brandenburg, and was a member of the Garfield Baptist Church. Her husband, Robert Wesley Dowell, preceded her in death on May 9, 1990. Surviving are a daughter, Robert Hill, Rt. 1, Irvington; three grandchildren, Dale Blan, Brandenburg, Lonnie Nottingham, Vine Grove, and Lyndell Hill Jr., Owensboro; and two great-grandchildren, Breonna and Robert Kyle Blan. funeral services were conducted at 12 noon Wednesday, October 29 at Trent- Dowell Funeral Home, Hardinsburg, with Gary Sharp, Hospice Chaplain, and Bro. Chuck Ellis officiating. Burial was in Hensley Cemetery in Garfield. GLEN STEVENS 1922-1997 Glen Stevens, age 75, died Sunday, October 26, 1997, at his home in Cloverport. Born August 30, 1922, in Rockp[ort, IN, he was a son of the late Albert Franklin and Maude Beavin Stevens. He was a retired chemical operator with the E. I. DuPont DeNemours & Co. in Louisville, and was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by two sons, Glen Franklin Stevens on October 26, 1986, and Mike Stevens on September 10, 1992. Survivors include his wigfe, Lena Stevens; two daughters, Mary Jane Holbrook, Frankfort, and Rita Taul, Lewisport; two sisters, Margaret Sohagene and Viola Howard, both of Louisville; a brother, Leon Stevens, Louisville; nine grand- children, and three great-grandchildren. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 29 from St. Rose Catholic Church in Cloverport, with Fr. Tom Clark officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Wallace Funeral Home. MRS. LUNA BOARD 1902-1997 Mrs. Luna Board, age 95, formerly of Irvington, died Monday, October 27, 1997, at Northfield Health Care Center in Louisville. Born March 11, 1902 in Breckinrdige County, Mrs. Board was a daughter of the late Horace Carman and Nancy Haynes. She was a homemaker and a member of the Irvington United Methodist Church. Her husband, Earl Board, preceded her in death in 1964. Surviving are a son, Hollis Board, Louisville; two sisters, Lula Bennett, Charlestown, IN, and Mary E. Sharp, Elizabethtown; a nephew whom she raised, Tony Carman, Louisville; a grandson, Michael Board, Wyoming; and three great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be ocnducted at 11 a.m. EST Thursday, October 30 at the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home, Irvington, with the Rev. Jim Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 until 8 p.m. EST Wednesday, and Thursday morning until the service at the funeral home. HARDIN STEVENSON JR. 1943-1997 Hardin (Steve) Sevenson, age 54, died Monday, October 20, 1997, at his home in Louisville. Born February 17, 1943 in Cloverport, he was the son of Pauline Carman Stevenson of Louisville, and the late Lennie Hardin Stevenson Sr. Mr. Stevenson was a member of the Baptist Church, and the Suburban Lodge 740 F&AM. He had worked at Reynolds Metal Co. for 24 years. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Elaine Ortiz and Shelia Lynn Witte; eight sisters, Jessie H. Mitchell, Wilma R. Emmitt, Bertha M. Stevenson, Linnie L. McGill, Alice Stevenson, Peggy Motley, Norma Jean Mauck, and Brenda K. Stevenson, and four grandchildren. Services were held Thursday, October 23, at the O. D. White Funeral Home in Louisville. Burial was in Cloverport Cemetery with graveside services being held there.
