OBITUARY
     Levi M. BATES, an 87 year old Rt. 3, Hardinsburg resident, died suddenly 
about 4 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 1989, at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital in 
Hardinsburg.
     Mr. BATES was born in Breckinridge County on November 7, 1901, a son of the 
late Ben and Elmina TAUL BATES.  He was a farmer, a member of Tar Fork Christian 
Church, and Hardinsburg Masonic Lodge No. 67, F&AM.  His wife, the former Thelma 
KENNEDY (should be Thelma WHITWORTH), three sons, C.B., Willard, and Joe BATES, 
all preceded him in death, as well as a son and daughter, who died at birth.
     Survivors include one daughter, three daughters-in-law, 16 grandchildren, 
and 22 great grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 29, 1989 from the chapel of 
the Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg.  Burial will be in Brickey Cemetery 
located on the Bates farm on Highway 992.

CORRECTION:
     The obituary for Levi Morton BATES, which appeared in last week's "The 
Herald-News" incorrectly listed Mrs. BATES' maiden name as KENNEDY when it was 
actually WHITWORTH.  We regret the error.
