The accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. CDT (Central Daylight Time) on Wednesday, September 28, 1977, while COMPTON was employed by Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, in Oshkosh, (Winnebago County), Wisconsin. A family member gave the following report: The Oshkosh Fire Department Rescue Squad arrived on the scene, and found COMPTON conscious and lying on his back. They attempted to place him on a stretcher in case of a back injury, but found that a porthole through which they had to pass, was too small for the stretcher. COMPTON's only complaint was a difficulty in breathing. He tried several times to lift himself to a standing position. The rescuers decided to help COMPTON to his feet so that he could be transported to the hospital. COMPTON collapsed and never regained consciousness. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 5:05 p.m. An autopsy revealed a ruptured aorta, which authorities believe to be the cause of the fall.
