M. COX -- W. M. COX was born in Stephensport, Ky (Breckinridge County) on May 2, 1872 and died March 23, 1904. He was the eldest son of J. P. and L. Kate COX, grandson of of the late Reverend William HEAD and also of William S. COX, deceased. At the age of 13 his parents removed to Henderson County, Kentucky, which county he resided until the past few years. In the year of 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Pattie RUDD of Corydon, Ky (Henderson County) who together with 3 little children, survive his loss. When 17 years of age, after profession of faith, he united with the First Baptist Church, of Henderson, of which church he was a faithful advocate until a few months since, at which time he was greatly revived in spirit, and decided that his duty was to follow the Methodist teachings in company with his wife, who has long been of this faith. At the time of his death he was in the employ of the I. C. R. R. (Illinois Central Railroad), and was stationed at Cerulean Springs, Ky (Trigg County). For several years he had been a much valued employee. On Wednesday, March 23, 1904, he ate his dinner as usual, and was in an exceptionally happy mood. At 2:00 the reconstruction train, loaded with ties, left Cerulean for the purpose for distributing necessary material for repairing the track for some miles distant. They had been gone only about one hour, had covered a distance of about 17 miles, and were crossing the bridge over Little River, which runs through Hopkinsville (Christian County). The train had been moving slowly, and 35 to 40 men were scattered the length of the train to prevent the ties coming in contact with the bridge railings. One tie slipped out of place, catching the deceased below the knees, turning him several somersaults and casting him into the water below, a fall of some 60 feet. The blow against the bridge, is suppose to have killed him. His body remained in the water about 5 hours before the searching party rescued it. Messrs. J. P. COX and See ROBINSON arrived in Hopkinsville at 6:00 the next morning, at which place the body was prepared for burial. It was then removed to Corydon, Henderson County, Kentucky, for interment. The funeral was conducted by the Reverend EVERETT, under the auspices of the A.O.U.W. Lodge at the Methodist Episcopal Church, which was held on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., March 25, 1904. A large number of friends from throughout the county were in attendance. Mr. William HEAD and Mrs. Walker BOARD, brother and sister of Mrs. COX, and Mr. Z. T. COX and wife of Ekron, Ky (Meade County), also Uncle of the deceased, arrived in time for the funeral. Besides his wife & children, his father & mother, and two sisters survive his loss. Additional Comments: According to the Breckinridge County Cemetery Book, volume 1, none of Mr. William COX'S relatives mentioned above are buried in Breckinridge County.
