DOWELL SUCCUMBS; WAS PROMINENT MORTICIAN Raymond Thomas DOWELL, Hardinsburg funeral director, died at the Breckinridge Memorial Hospital on February 9, 1973, after a lengthy illness. His death occurred one day before his 87th birthday. He had served as funeral director and owner of the R.T. DOWELL Funeral Home in Hardinsburg since 1910. He retired from active participation in the business on January 1, 1973, after selling his interests to Mr. and Mrs. J. H. TRENT. Affectionately known as "R.T.", Mr. DOWELL began his business career in 1902, when as a lad of 16, he went to work as a clerk in the T.A. Gray Store in Garfield. From there he moved to the G.D. Shellman Store in Hardinsburg, and was later employed by the B. F. BEARD Company (Undertaker) in Hardinsburg. He was a deacon of the Hardinsburg Baptist Church, charter member of the Hardinsburg Rotary Club, a former city clerk of Hardinsburg, and a Mason. He maintained a life-long interest in agriculture, and owned several farms in the county. He was married to the former Carrie WALLS, who survives. Other survivors include: one sister: Mrs. Verdie BROWN of Garfield, Ky (Breckinridge County) one nephew: Alton BROWN of Garfield, Ky two nieces: Mrs. Emma Lee BOARD of Louisville, Ky (Jefferson County) Mrs. Louise WITHERS of Radcliff, Ky (Hardin County) He was the son of the late William T. DOWELL and Alsie WOODS DOWELL, and was born near Garfield on February 10, 1886. Funeral Services were held on Sunday, February 11, 1973 from the Hardinsburg Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Reverend Raymond W. Farrar, assisted by the Reverend K. A. Loy, pastor of the Hardinsburg United Methodist Church, and Reverend Arnold Meiring, pastor of the St. Romuald Catholic Church. Interment was in the Ivy Hill Cemetery, Hardinsburg.
