CARRIE DOWELL KILLED BY MOTORIST; DRIVER FACES MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES Mrs. Carrie Lou DOWELL, Hardinsburg, died at 8:38 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 1975, of injuries sustained when struck by an automobile in front of the Hardinsburg Baptist Church. The accident occurred as Mrs. DOWELL was returning home from evening church services. She died some 25 minutes after being removed to the Breckinridge Memorial Hospital, Hardinsburg, of apparent head injuries. Grover Eugene "Butch" FENTRESS, Jr., 25, of Westview, the alleged driver of the vehicle, was charged at the scene with driving while intoxicated, and was lodged overnight in the county jail. He was released Monday morning on $500 bond, after entering a plea of not guilty. Sherriff Bobby D. Kennedy said charges of second degree manslaughter will be placed against Fentress on Wednesday. Under the new penal code, second degree manslaughter is comparable to involuntary manslaughter. Mrs. DOWELL spent most of her life in public service to the community, and was County Treasurer of Breckinridge County for 36 years before her retirement in July 1970. She had been deputy Master Commissioner under her father, the late Lee WALLS, her brother, David C. WALLS, and the late B. F. Beard, Jr. She was a circuit court reporter for the late Judge George K. Holbert, and had been secretary in the office of Commonwealth Attorney, Henry D. Moorman. She was a member of the Hardinsburg Baptist Church, the Women's Missionary Union, and the National Association of County Treasurers. The widow of R.T. DOWELL, prominent Hardinsburg funeral director, Mrs. DOWELL is survived by: one sister: Mrs. Lennie W. McLAUGHLIN of Louisville, Ky (Jefferson County) and several nieces and nephews The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 1975 at the Hardinsburg Baptist Church with the pastor, the Reverend Rudy Patton, officiating. Burial was in the Ivy Hill Cemetery, directed by Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. NOTE: I found her obituary on the Find-A-Grave.com website, through Ancestry.com.
