He was 38 years old. EVANS was attempting to rescue his 14-year-old son, Larry, who had jumped into the water in an attempt to retrieve a boat tarp that had blown off, said Captain Dennis Watson with the Kentucky Water Patrol. The teenager apparently became endangered and the father jumped into the water to rescue his son. "Larry Hardin witnessed the incident from his cabin on the lake, and ran down a hill, jumped into the water, and swam 50 yards out and pulled the younger EVANS to shore", Captain Watson said. By the time Hardin made it to shore with the boy, the father dad disappeared beneath the water. Larry EVANS was treated for shock at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital in Hardinsburg. The McDaniels Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue was the first on the scene. Assisting were the Falls of Rough Volunteer Fire Department, Kentucky State Police, Breckinridge County Sheriff's Office, Leitchfield Rescue Divers, and Kentucky Water Patrol. The rescue workers were at the scene until late into the night attempting to retrieve EVANS' body. Dragging operations continued until late Saturday evening and were resumed early Sunday morning. The body of Lawrence EVANS was recovered about 7:50 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 1990 by Dave Custin, a commercial diver called in by the Water Patrol. "All of the Departments called in, gave it their best shot", said Captain Watson, but the real heroes are Larry Hardin and Dave Custin.
