A cousin, Kenny GIBSON of Sample, who took care of the elderly man, discovered the tragedy. GIBSON was taking groceries by tractor to the older man when he discovered the one-story frame home had burned down. The body was found on the floor next to his bed, with the remains of his dog and cat next to him. It is believed the fire occurred sometime Friday night, according to his family. The house was located two miles off Highway 259 south of Sample. According to Mrs. Kenny GIBSON, the older man was the only child of the late Joseph Nelson GIBSON and Ida PAYNE GIBSON, and depended on her husband for contact with the outside world. The house had no electricity, but GIBSON owned a battery operated radio, and liked to listed to ballgames, said Mrs. GIBSON. A farmer all his life, GIBSON had raised tobacco and cattle, but gave up tobacco several years ago and cattle this past fall upon the urging of his nearest relatives. Mr. GIBSON added that although he lived like a hermit, family photo albums revealed the pride of his parents by always dressing him in suits, while his schoolmates and friends dressed in bib overalls for sessions at Sample School. GIBSON had not been away from his home for the past ten years. OBITUARY PAGE, same issue: William Harry GIBSON, age 79, of Sample, Ky in Breckinridge County, died in a fire at his home on Friday, January 30, 1981. The son of the late Joseph Nelson GIBSON and Ida PAYNE GIBSON; he was born in Breckinridge County on May 15, 1901. Cousins are the only survivors. The funeral was held on Monday, February 2, 1981 at 10:00 a.m. from the Trent- Dowell Funeral Home, Hardinsburg. Burial was in the Sample Cemetery.
