(Louisville-Henderson & St. Louis Railroad) Clyde HALL of Cloverport and Hewitt MAYSEY of Stephensport, died with four other trainmen in a head-on collision on Friday morning, February 1, 1929. The accident happened at 3:45 a.m. when passenger train #146 bound for Louisville, and freight train #167 headed for Henderson, crashed into each other on a sharp curve six miles east of Henderson. It was by far the worst wreck in history of the road. Among the dead: Clyde HALL, age 39, fireman for engineer Bush. Hall was born and reared in Cloverport, and the son of Mrs. William HALL of this city, who is wintering in Boston, Massachusettes with her daughter, Mrs. Oliver LEWIS. Hall had been living in Louisville for several years. HALL BURIED IN LOUISVILLE John and Jess HALL of this city (Cloverport), went to Henderson Friday morning to identify the body of their brother. HALL'S body, and that of three others, including Mr. BUSH and Mr. BELL, were taken to Louisville on Saturday morning to their homes. Clyde HALL was born near Cloverport 39 years ago. The eldest son of the late William HALL and Mrs. HALL of this city. Clyde's wife's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Milton MATHENY. Clyde is survived by: his widow, Mrs. Lottie MATHENY HALL his mother two sisters: Mrs. Oliver LEWIS of West Medford, Massachussettes (Middlesex County) Mrs. Edward GREGORY of this city two brothers: John HALL of this city Jess HALL of this city The funeral was on Monday afternoon at his late home in Louisville by the Reverend Vollmar, assistant Pastor of Walnut Street Baptist Church. (where he wanted to be buried) Additional Comments: I have no access to burials at the Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Ky. Breackinridge County Cemeteries, Volume one, published in 1991: Clyde HALL'S PARENTS: Cloverport Cemetery, Cloverport, Ky single tombstone HALL, William Harris 10 Dec 1861 -- 16 Dec 1927 single tombstone Willie MORRIS HALL 05 Jan 1862 -- 02 Jan 1928 I could not find the death record for Clyde's mother, Willie MORRIS HALL, in Kentucky. So, I checked Medford, Massachusettes, and I found her: Ancestry.com's database: Massachusettes Death Index, 1901 to 1980 Name: HALL, Willie Maiden Name: MORRIS Town of Death: Medford Year: 1930 Volume #62, Page 433 I knew Willie could not have died in 1928, the death date on her tombstone, because she was listed as a survivor in her son, Clyde's obituary in January 1929. Also in Clyde's obituary, his sister, Mrs. Oliver LEWIS was a resident of West Medford, Massachussettes. Makes sense Willie would be living with one of her children after her husband died. Also, see Mr. Hewitt B. MAYSEY'S obituary in a separate posting.
