Miss Eddie Howard, a Charming Young Lady of Breckinridge, Killed by the Accidental Discharge of a SHOTGUN. The particulars of another shocking shotgun tragedy are recounted in the Breckinridge News of Wednesday, as follows: "On Tuesday morning of last week, on the waters of Sinking Creek, one mile below the village of Clifton Mills, in this county, Miss Eddie, the daughter of Mrs. Edward HOWARD, met a tragic death in the following manner: "It seems that Mr. HOWARD and his wife had gone over to visit a neighbor, and left the house in charge of their sons, John and Charley, aged respectivly 19 and 15, and Miss Eddie, aged 17. Sinking Creek runs within forty yards of the house, and after they were through with their morning chores, the young people got their poles and lines and went down to the creek fishing. About 10 o'clock, they procured the shotgun from the house for the purpose of shooting rabbits. Tiring of that in an hour, they returned to the creek to resume fishing. John laid the gun down across a rock on the bank of the creek, and as the two boys started to go to where they had left their poles, told Miss Eddie that she could take the gun up to the house." "She turned towards where the weapon was lying, and the boys proceeded in the direction of their fishing implements, but had not gone many paces when they were startled by the report of the gun. Looking back, they saw their sister lying on the ground by the side of the rock on which the gun was lying. Running to her, they saw the blood gushing in a stream from a great hole in the top of her head, while her brains were scattered all about the ground." "A messenger was sent to Clifton Mills for Dr. P. W. Foote, who hurried to the scene, but, of course, could do nothing for the unfortunate young lady but examine the nature of the wound, as her death was instantaneous. The charge, which was bird shot, entered the face just beneath the right eyebrow, ploughed its way through the head emerging from the crown, and carrying with it the frontal and parietal bones and brain." "As neither of her brothers witnessed the tragic occurrance, its manner can only be conjectured. The most reasonable supposition is that she caught up the gun by the barrel near the muzzle, and in drawing it towards her, the hammer caught against the edge of the rock with sufficient force to discharge the weapon." "Miss Eddie was a most estimable young lady, and the sad occurrance has cast a gloom over the entire community in which she resided."
