He was born January 3, 1896 in Hancock County, Ky (at Cabot), the son of John MATTHEWS and Laura KEOWN MATTHEWS. He was a retired farmer, a member of the New Clover Creek Baptist Church, and a veteran of World War I. He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Pearl MATTHEWS four sisters: Mrs. Neria MITCHELL of Louisville, Ky Ms. Nina MATTHEWS of Louisville, Ky Mrs. Ruby SOEDER of Louisville, Ky three brothers: Samuel Avery MATTHEWS of Hartford, Ky Victor MATTHEWS of Paoli, Indiana Marcus Shelby MATTHEWS of Louisville, Ky Also surviving are nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 1981, from the New Clover Creek Baptist Church. Burial was in the Pisgah Cemetery, Star Route, Cloverport with the Harry L. Dhonau Funeral Home, Cloverport, in charge of arrangements.
