R. L. NEWSOM DIED TUESDAY _____________ One of Cloverport's Most Prominent Women Succumbed At 82 Years. _____________ Mrs. Jennie SCOTT NEWSOM, 82, widow of Dr. R. L. NEWSOM, and one of the most widely known women in Cloverport, died at her home here Tuesday morning October 5 (1926) at 2 o'clock. Mrs. NEWSOM had been ill since July, and her condition gradually grew worse. Just before the end, she sank into a deep sleep, surrounded by loved ones. The funeral will be held from the residence this afternoon, Wednesday, with the Reverend Mr. MARTIN, an Episcopal minister from Henderson, officiating. Interment will be held in the Murray Cemetery. Born in Cloverport, February 25, 1844, Mrs. NEWSOM is the last of the immediate family of Dr. Stephen SCOTT and Margaret MURRAY SCOTT, and the descendant of two prominent families. Dr. SCOTT was a member of one of the foremost families ____? Grayson County at Falls of Rough. He came to Cloverport in early manhood and practiced medicine here for years. His wife was also an heir of one of Cloverport's and Breckinridge County's leading families. Mrs. NEWSOM had one sister, Mrs. Annie SCOTT BRASHEAR, who died a few years ago. Mrs. NEWSOM was first married to Charles JABINE of Cloverport, and to this union, three children were born, all of whom are dead. She was later married to Robert L. NEWSOM, a prominent druggist of this city. His death occurred several years ago. Practically all of Mrs. NEWSOM'S life was spent in Cloverport with the exception of a few years. This was always home to her, and during her latter years she could tell the children of the present generation living in this city of their grandparents and even great grandparents. She loved people as a whole, and was always keenly interested in human affairs. She had a brilliant mind, was an authority on a great many subjects, and was very artistic in her trade. Up until the last few years, she was very apt with her needle, and did beautiful handiwork. She loved books and poetry. In fact, she had an interesting personality and a magnetism that drew people to her at all times. She was always friendly with the rich and poor, high and low, and was a philanthropical disposition. She was such a distinct character to this community that her presence will be missed by scores of people. Some years ago, Mrs. NEWSOM was confirmed in the Episcopal Church. She is survived by: her grandson, Harry G. NEWSOM of this city, whom she reared from infancy ______? _______? the death of his mother. also another grandson, James JABINE of Trinidad, Colorado and a great granddaughter, Margaret NEWSOM, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harry G. She is the widow of R. L. NEWSOM, whose demise preceded about 15 years. Mrs. NEWSOM is survived by: two grandsons: Harry NEWSOM, of this city James JABINE, of Colorado a niece, Miss Gense BRASHEAR, of Louisville, Ky a nephew, Peter BRASHEAR of New York City Funeral services will be held from the home at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, and burial in the Murray Cemetery. JABINE (died bet. 1866 and 1870) married 12 Sep 1860 in Breckinridge County, Ky wife of #2- Robert L. NEWSOM married 13 Apr 1893 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Ky daughter of Dr. Stephen G. SCOTT & Margaret MURRAY have her death certificate have both obituaries she has a single tombstone NOTE: Jennie JABINE (widow) was listed in 1870 Breckinridge census with 3 children: Marnie 8, John 6, and Charles 4; all JABINE children. In 1880 census Breckinridge County, Jennie JABINE listed as a widow with two children: Mamie (Marnie) 18, and John 16, both JABINE children.. John was still living in April 1883, when he was a witness to his sister's wedding.
