COVA POLLITT, age 78, of Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois was killed Friday, June 20, 1969 when she was struck by a Pennsylvania Central Railroad Freight train in the 100th block of North 15th. Police said the train was westbound, and nearing the crossing, when Mrs. POLLITT attempted to cross. She apparently did not realize the train was so near, and the left corner of the engine struck her. FUNERAL: June 23, 1969; Schillings Funeral Home in Mattoon. BURIAL: Long Point Cemetery near Toledo, Illinois (Cumberland County) Born December 6, 1890 in Breckinridge County, Ky, the daughter of Ned and Bartha DRANE BUTLER. She married in 1915 to Ernie SMITH, also of Breckinridge County. To this union, three children were born. Mr. SMITH died in 1922. She married Harold POLLITT in 1956. He died in 1957. Surviving Mrs. POLLITT are: one son: Albert Russell SMITH of Mattoon, Illinois one daughter: Mrs. Geneva O'DELL of Paris, Illinois (Edgar County) A son, James preceded her in death. Mrs. POLLITT had been a Practical Nurse at the Cunningham Nursing Home about 10 years, and a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, the WSCS. Mrs. POLLITTS' father, Ned BUTLER, was killed October 21, 1930 by a train while riding his horse near the then Claude BUTLER home, which is now the home of Mrs. Mark BEARD.
