He died at his home near Guston in Meade County, December 5th, 1894. Mr. Shumate leaves a wife and 10 children, 4 brothers, 1 sister, and a host of friends to mourn his loss. He was a quiet, kind man in his family, a good citizen, and a good neighbor, and will be missed by the entire community. Yes, all will miss Uncle Bill, but the greatest loss is felt in that once happy family, where he was so kind, indulgent, and loving to wife and children. There's a loss none can know but themselves. That father's chair is empty, his place around the fireside is vacant. Oh God: how hard it is for us to bow in humble submission at all times and say "Thy will, not ours be done". But look up dear wife and children through your tears to Him who wisely wounds will heal the bleeding hearts, and be a father to the fatherless, a help to the widow. Only a little while and the severed links will all be found in heaven. S. S.
