The only young man she ever loved, has turned against her. THE LETTER REVEALS ALL Custer, Ky., Aug. 17, 1896 -- Mr. Editor. Sir, our town was in a quiet mood, and our school commenced with about ten children in attendance and our young teacher, J. H. Hoskinson, to straighten them out, and after we got them all seated we left them and soon was called to A. B. Oliver's, his cook, a Miss Alice Sinclair, was found hanging dead in his barn and from all we can learn she had been dead for an hour, with this written, in her dress pocket and about one-half of it sticking out. "Custer, Ky., Aug. 17, 1896 -- To all of my people and friends, I am in the notion this morning that there is no more pleasure for me in this troublesome world and I don't want to live any longer. The only one that I ever loved in this world has refused to speak to me and I can't live in this world without his friendship, I would like to see him again and have a long talk with him, but it is so that I can't never see him again, I have read of sad pieces and it always seemed to me like that would be the way I would die. Tell my father and my mother that they have enough other to comfort them in their old age. Tell my brothers and sisters not to weep over me. I want to be buried in black and I want to be buried at home by the side of my little brother, I have lived eighteen years in thie world and now I want to try a better. I want Ader Cloven to see me before I am put away. I don't want any body to grieve after me. I don't think there is many that will. I have been thinking of this for a long time and now I have decided. I heard news this morning that broke my heart. You must excuse bad writing for I can hardly hold my pencil. I want to be buried Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and and I want all of my friends to be there that can get there. I want all of my things gathered up and give to Ira. I have wrote all that I have time, I will close this letter by asking you all to meet me in a better world, where there is no sin and sorrow. Written by, Alice Sinclair We at once cut her down and sent for "Squire C. C. Carman and he came down and summoned a jury and they found a verdict that she came to her death by hanging herself, there is no use rehearsing the evidence as I left a space for her letter that she had on her person. The father, mother, brothers, and sisters have the sympathy of the writer. Miss Alice was an intelligent and highly esteemed young girl and is of one of the best families of this county there relatives are many in this neighborhood, being a decendant of the Carters and Sinclairs, whom I have known from my early recollections and only knew them to love them. Extending all my sympathy to the family I remain as ever, George Harned Additional Comments: Alice is the niece of my gg-grandmother, Alice Blissett Lynch (for whom I believe she was named for). Having a copy of the suicide note, I believe the "Ader Cloven" that Alice mentions, is possibly Ader Clausen. The "Ira" that is mentioned (with regards to receiving Alice's personal belongings) appears to be "Iva". I have no proof at present, just how I was able to interpret the handwriting. Alice is believed buried in an unmarked grave, next to her little brother Allie Herman St. Clair (also in an unmarked grave). Both are in the family cemetery that holds the remains of their parents, siblings, two nephews, and niece.
