R. WHALEN OF VANZANT WHOSE LIFE IS AT AN END -- At Vanzant, Ky (Breckinridge County) last Wednesday, the remains of A. R. WHALEN, one of the most promising young teachers of the county, were buried. Mr. WHALEN died on Tuesday of last week, November 29, 1904, at Central City, Kentucky (Muhlenberg County). Death came after only a weeks' illness of pneumonia. Arthur WHALEN was born in this county (Breckinridge) 24 years ago. He secured his education in the schools of this county, and soon after began his life's work as a teacher. He taught several terms at the Pisgah School, the last term about three years ago. He was well liked by his pupils and patrons, and gave general satisfaction. His popularity followed him to Central City, where he taught for about two years. Two brothers, W. W. WHALEN and Charles WHALEN, his mother, and one sister, of Vanzant, survive. Mr. Whalen W. WHALEN, who is a well-known teacher, was formerly Principal of the Hardinsburg Public School. The Central City Correspondent of the "Owensboro Messenger" newspaper, pays a tribute to Mr. WHALEN in the following: " One of the saddest deaths that has occurred recently in Central City, was that of Mr. A. R. WHALEN, one of the towns best known and deservedly popular young men. He was ill only a week, and his death came as a shock to the community. He had made his home here for only two years, but by his many sterling qualities, had endured himself to the people and particularily to the children over whom he had charge while Assistant Principal of the East Side School, a position which he filled with great credit to himself and the town." Additional Comments: I did not find a tombstone for Arthur WHALEN in the Breckinridge County Cemetery Book, volume 1, published in 1991. In fact, I did not find any tombstones for the WHALEN surname. I did however, find someone in Volume 2, cemetery book that was published in 1997. Not sure of spelling, and I have no idea if she is connected: Big Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, located on the west side of Highway 1073 in the town of Big Spring.
