She was born in Webster Grove, MO on January 7, 1913, the daughter of the late Jefferson Davis and Ruth Sterett Davison. She moved with her family to Skillman in Hancock County in May 1917. During World War I, at the age of 5, she snipped fabric to stuff pillows for overseas military hospitals and was recognized as the youngest Red Cross worker. Medora graduated from the old Beechmont High School at Hawesville in 1930. During the Depression, she worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as a supervisor and attended Western Kentucky State Teachers College in Bowling Green, graduating in 1940. She worked for the Farm Security Administration in Muhlenburg County and Inland Steel Company in Floyd County as a nutritionist.She began teaching in 1943 and retired in 1974 after 22 years, having taught in both the Breckinridge County and Cloverport Independent school districts. She loved to travel and visit interesting locations. She treated herself to visits to the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia and even traveled both down and up the Ohio River on a barge, passing her family home in Hancock County. She had an excellent memory and could recall facts and events readliy. Medora was a charter member of the Breckinridge County Historical Society. The organization honored her as "Historian of the Year" in 1997. She was a member of the Lafayette Springs Chapter of the American Revolution, Hancock County Genealogical Society, Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, President's Circle at Western Kentucky University and was the first to sign a contract to begin an annuity fund for the Kentucky Museum on campus. She ws a member of the Hardinsburg United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband: James Withers in 1990 and 2 infant sons - Hardin in 1953 and Miller in 1955 and a half brother- Leslie Springer Davison in 1975. Medora is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Jeff and JoAnne Withers of Campbellsville,KY her granddaughter: Courtni Anne Withers of Glasgow,KY her sister-in-law: Rosemary Davison of St. Louis,MO special friends: Scottie and Janet Jolly of Hardinsburg,KY Services will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 1PM CST at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Ivy Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10AM CST Wednesday.
